Beach Volley

1990 KevätKalifornian palmurannoilla on kehitelty monenmoista villitystä surffauksesta rullalautoihin. Beach Volley eli rantapallo on lentopallon muunnelma, jossa on kaksimiehiset joukkueet ja peliympäristönä yleensä lokoisa aurinkoranta. Säännöissä on joitain eroja lentopalloon, esimerkiksi voitetusta pallosta saa aina pisteen ja erävoittoon vaaditaan vain seitsemän pistettä.

Näin pelkistetty urheilulaji sopii mainiosti kotimikroon. Kahden pelaajan kontrollointi on ratkaistu siten, että tietokone hoitelee passarin tehtävät. Pelaaja huoleksi jää siis ottaa syöttö vastaan ja mäjäyttää passi vastustajan kenttään. Joskus on tyydyttävä tavalliseen hihalyöntiin, sillä varsinkin takakentältä tulevaan matalaan passiin on vaikea osua.

Kaveria vastaan pelaaminen on tietysti omaa luokkaansa.

Pelihahmojen animaatiossa on paljon hyviä yksityiskohtia, esimerkiksi niiden katse seuraa aina palloa ja hyppylyöntiin kurottautuvan pelaajan voimallinen vartalonkäyttö on näyttävän näköistä. Pelissä on jatkuvasti pientä sähinää ja vauhdikkuutta on vielä korostettu palloa seuraavalla vierityksellä.

Tietokonetta vastaan pelattavassa turnauksessa on käytössä armoton kerrasta poikki -systeemi.

1990 KevätAll sorts of crazes have been dreamed up on the palm-lined beaches of California, from surfing to skateboards. Beach Volley, i.e. beach volleyball, is a variant of volleyball with two-man teams, usually played on a cosy sun-soaked beach. The rules differ from volleyball in a few ways; for example, you always get a point for winning a rally, and only seven points are needed to win a set.

A sport stripped down this far is a perfect fit for a home computer. The problem of controlling two players has been solved by having the computer take care of the setter's duties. So all that's left for the player to worry about is receiving the serve and smashing the set into the opponents' court. Sometimes you have to settle for a plain old bump, since a low set coming from the back court in particular is hard to hit. You can try to stop the other side's attack with a well-timed jump block.

The game's biggest difficulty lies in timing the jump spikes, and at first it takes a while before you can even get a serve over, especially since the skimpily clad girlies posing at the courtside badly wreck your concentration. Once you finally start getting the hang of the tricks, the long rallies and merciless battles guarantee some real gaming pleasure, even if the computer hands you a 7-0 drubbing. Playing against a mate is, of course, in a class of its own.

The animation of the players has lots of nice details; for example, their eyes always follow the ball, and the powerful body work of a player stretching up into a jump spike looks impressive. There's a constant bit of sizzle in the game, and the sense of speed is played up even further by scrolling that follows the ball.

The tournament against the computer uses a merciless one-strike-and-you're-out system. That's where you'll find the game's one and only blunder - and an all the more baffling one for it. You see, the matches have a time limit, and when time runs out the computer's team is always declared the winner. A pretty unfair way to add to the game's difficulty.
