1990 KevätThe Adventure of Link eli toiselta nimeltään Zelda II on suoraa jatkoa Zeldan legendaan. Juoni satuilee tähän tapaan: prinsessa Zelda vetelee ikiunia temppelin korokkeella ja siihen myös jää, ellei joku onnistu löytämään Suureen Palatsiin kätkettyä Rohkeuden Voimaa. Sankariksi ilmottautuu jälleen Link, mutta ensin hänen on etsittävät kristallit kuudesta pienemmästä palatsista, jotta Suurta Palatsia vartioiva lumous särkyisi.
Zelda II on edeltäjäänsä monimuotoisempi tuote.
TAOL on silti erinomainen peli.
1990 KevätThe Adventure of Link, otherwise known as Zelda II, is a direct continuation of the legend of Zelda. The plot spins its yarn along these lines: Princess Zelda is snoozing the sleep of ages on a dais in a temple, and there she will stay, unless somebody manages to find the Power of Courage hidden in the Great Palace. Link signs up as the hero once again, but first he must seek out the crystals in six smaller palaces, so that the spell guarding the Great Palace would be broken.
Zelda II is a more varied product than its predecessor. The pointy-eared pixie hero scampers about a landscape viewed from above, which switches to side-on scrolling in villages, caves and palaces. If you stray from the road, you may find Ganon's tenacious followers on your back. Then a side view a couple of screens wide is used, whose scenery and cavalcade of bogeymen vary according to the type of terrain.
Out in the middle of the landscape, too, you can come across places depicted in more detail, a typical example being the monster-infested bridges. The palaces are such vast, multi-level mazes that they actually form separate sub-games of their own.
In role-playing style, Link grows more powerful as the adventure progresses and learns new spells. The keys to success are conversations with the people you meet and combing the play area down to the last nook and cranny.
The whole thing has the feel of an adventure, but the main emphasis is on self-explanatory swordplay and platform jumping. The game has commendable variety and superb playability, except that in places the difficulty slips over onto the frustrating side. In principle the ingredients of a classic are all there, but some undefinable factor didn't click into place in my head. Perhaps it was down to the conventional execution typical of the Japanese and the clichéd plot. TAOL is nonetheless an excellent game.
