Silpheed
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1989 SyksySilpheed on Sierran seikkailupeleihin tottuneelle outo ilmestys.
Näitä uusia innovaatioita lukuunottamatta Silpheed on varsin tavanomainen ammuskelupeli.
1989 SyksyTo anyone used to Sierra's adventure games, Silpheed is a strange apparition. Some time ago Sierra released Thexder, a robot game designed by two Japanese rascals, which achieved enormous popularity around the world even though the game wasn't exactly showered with praise in MikroBITTI. Silpheed is the Japanese twosome's latest, and it is a completely honest and straightforward shoot-'em-up. That in itself is something new, since the PC has not been overly blessed with games of destruction. This is presumably partly because a sideways- or vertically-scrolling shooting game is, given the PC's hardware, a tough nut to crack.
So the designers have reworked the whole basic idea in such a way that implementing the game isn't too difficult even on the PC. The background doesn't scroll anywhere; only the ships zip from one edge to the other. So that this idea wouldn't collapse into the old cliches, the playing area has, as it were, been tilted in three dimensions. Enemy ships grow as they come towards the bottom of the screen, and correspondingly the player's own ship shrinks as it climbs towards the top.
Apart from these new innovations, Silpheed is a fairly ordinary shooting game. Destroying enemies lets you collect capsules containing bonus points, extra weapons, extra shield fields and other such things. Some levels have an animated planet surface as their backdrop instead of the usual starscape. The graphics are an odd mix of vector graphics and sprite graphics. The doodads moving about the screen flit briskly from place to place just like sprites, but appear to be made of vectors. The main thing is that it works.
Once again the PC's single-voice sound chip fails to make anyone jump, but, as is typical for Siera, the game supports some music cards, and then the aural pleasure is in a completely different league from that ear-rending beeping. Silpheed plays fast and pleasantly, and is easily the best blasting game on the PC. That's saying a lot, that is.
