Shoot Em Up Construction Kit
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1989 SyksyKoska ampumapeli on peliajatukseltaan usein äärimmäisen pelkistetty, se soveltuu erinomaisesti peligeneraattorin raaka-aineeksi. Palace Softwaren markkinoima Shoot Em Up Construction Kit (SEUCK) tarjoaa tavalliselle pelaajalle välineet rakentaa suhteellisen helposti omia, toimivia räiskintäpelejä, jotka olisivat olleet jokunen vuosi sitten suuria hittejä.
1989 SyksySince the shooting game is often extremely stripped down in its concept, it lends itself superbly as raw material for a game generator. The Shoot Em Up Construction Kit (SEUCK), marketed by Palace Software, gives the ordinary player the means to build, relatively easily, working blasters of their own that would have been big hits a few years ago. An exceptionally gifted and laterally calculating game tinkerer might even come up with something completely new by using these tools creatively.
SEUCK lets the game tinkerer populate their micro's screen with creatures that look however they want. Each object is drawn with the help of a simple grid, in which small squares of different colours are switched on and off to create the image. Animation comes from using image sequences in which the individual frames change into one another in the desired order after a preset delay. Besides your own fighting unit, the enemies and the various projectiles, you also have to create the game's background. The setting for the action is produced by drawing, combining and copying various elements.
Since this is no silent movie, SEUCK comes with a bundle of sound effects that can be attached to the events seen on screen. The effects can be run at different speeds and their volume can be adjusted. If your skills and technical equipment allow, you can also produce more sound effects under your own steam.
If making a game of your own feels overwhelming at first, you can spend your time getting to know the three blasters that come with SEUCK. You can examine the techniques used in making them just as if you were editing a finished game of your own. You can make whatever changes you like to them and see the effects of those changes by test-playing.
A game made with SEUCK, once saved to disk, is a self-contained, independently running whole, which you can give to a friend to test or try to sell to software houses for distribution. The only restrictions are that SEUCK's name must appear in the end product and that no parts of the demo games supplied with the program have been copied into your own game.
SEUCK is surely the most educational way to get acquainted with shoot-'em-ups and the tools used to create them. On top of that, it gives you an informed critical eye for reviewing Shoot-em-ups.
