Modem Wars

Jatkuvasti on päätettävä, mille osastoille ehtii antaa edes käskyjä - saatikka sitten apua tahi tulitukea. Risteilyohjus esimerkiksi lamauttaa (muunmuuassa) räjähdyspilveensä joutuneet yksiköt, ja jos komentokeskus on yksi niistä, tilanne muuttuu tooooodella mielenkiintoiseksi.

Ohjelman pahimmat puutteet liittyvät tietokonetta vastaan pelaamiseen.

1989 SyksyDan Bunten, the creator of M.U.L.E and Seven Cities of Gold, has done it again - a computer game whose idea is as fresh as a bread roll eaten straight out of the oven, as easy to play as a die and as hard to master as a two-handed sword.

Modem Wars is a strategy game running in real time, played either against the computer or against a human or equivalent cursing away at the other end of a modem line. Each player's forces consist of three different sorts of combat robots, scout robots and a command centre, inside which the player, in principle, sits in person. The command centre can also launch cruise missiles and ordinary missiles, whose destructive power is terrific - but this reveals the command centre's position to the opponent, who can then send their own cruise missiles on their way.

The battle ends either in a win on points when time runs out, or when one side's command centre has been clubbed into a smoking heap of scrap. Along the line you can of course also send nasty insults to the other side...

The action is pretty fast-paced, and the player has to grapple with the real problems of the battlefield. You constantly have to decide which units you even have time to give orders to - let alone aid or fire support. A cruise missile, for example, paralyses (among other things) any units caught in its blast cloud, and if the command centre is one of them, things get reeeeeally interesting.

The program's worst shortcomings have to do with playing against the computer. You see, the program can fly its cruise missiles a great deal more accurately than a human can. On top of that, it can shoot down the player's cruise missiles with ordinary missiles, which is quite an achievement for a human. As a result, the computer normally clubs the player's command centre into stew with its cruise missiles without the player getting a single one of their own shots home.

For strategy game fans who own a modem, Modem Wars is in any case an absolutely compulsory purchase. And be nice and buy it from a shop, so that the software houses and importers get the idea that more of this sort of thing is needed, and fast.
