Duel, The: Test Drive II + Supercars Datadisk & Scenery Datadisk

Pelin perimmäisenä tavoitteena on selvitä hengissä tien loppuun asti.

Viimeinen valinta ennen ratin taakse hyppäämistä on vaikeustason säätö.

Tällä hetkellä saatavana on Supercars, joka sisältää Test Drive I:n päivitetyt autot.

Grafiikka valitettavasti on TD I:n luokkaa, kuten ääniefektitkin. Alkumusiikki on sentään aluksi ihan mukiinmenevä, mutta pidemmän päälle raivostuttava. Kuitenkin: jos pidit TD I:stä, pidät tästäkin, ja todennäköisesti vieläkin enemmän.

1989 SyksyTest Drive can still be found on the games shelf of every well-stocked computer shop. The game is simple and technically unsophisticated, so what is its appeal? I don't know, but apparently Distinctive Software does, since the lads have now managed to come up with a sequel to Test Drive. I'll even venture to predict greater success for it than for its predecessor.

Everyone is interested in the things they can't have. The programmers kept this in mind, and that is why in TD II the player gets to choose between two road-devourers capable of over 300 kilometres an hour, the Porsche 959 and the Ferrari F40.

After choosing the car you choose the type of race. When driving against the clock you simply try to get from the start to the finish in as little time as possible, but more fun (and more points, if you're aiming for the high score table) comes from racing a computer-driven car. In this case you also have to choose a car for the computer from the two available. The ultimate goal of the game is to make it to the end of the road alive.

The last choice before jumping behind the wheel is setting the difficulty level. On the first four levels the computer handles the gear changes, so the player's job is to work the accelerator and the brake and keep the car on the road. On the remaining levels you have to fiddle with the gears yourself. The closer the difficulty level gets to a real professional, the faster the computer-driven car goes. Other things governed by the difficulty level are the speed of the police, the amount of oncoming traffic, the scoring and the realism. On the easiest levels you can take even tight bends almost flat out, and the tyres don't even squeal. But pick a harder level, and you have to start paying attention to the road signs.

There are also police on the roads. The player's car comes with a radar detector as standard, which starts chirping when there is a radar nearby. There are two ways to deal with the police (at least in this game, not necessarily in real life): you can slow down to the speed the limit dictates, or put your foot to the floor and leave the coppers behind. The latter option is considerably harder, but you do save on fines and rake in the points if you pull it off. Failure leads to fines or to the car's engine moving a couple of metres backwards (into the driver's lap, in fact).

The most notable improvement in TD II compared with the firstborn is the changing and varied scenery and road network. The cars' different handling characteristics also stand out much more clearly. On top of that, separately sold data disks contain more cars and new roads. Currently available is Supercars, which contains the updated cars from Test Drive I. At first glance the cars look exactly the same as in I, but on closer inspection there are differences in handling, power and top speeds. The other data floppy on sale is California Challenge, which contains seven stretches of road from California. Using the data disks is, to put it mildly, agonising with one disk drive, awkward with two and sheer joy with three disk drives. The program farsightedly includes the option of making a game disk from the data disks, after which the infuriating disk-juggling is no longer needed (very much).

The muddled manual is not much help, even less so for those who don't know the language. Luckily the manual contains nothing essential that you couldn't find out for yourself with one trial game. The graphics are unfortunately in TD I's class, as are the sound effects. The title music is at least quite passable at first, but infuriating in the long run. Still: if you liked TD I, you'll like this one too, and probably even more.
