Test Drive
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Grafiikaltaan peli on kyllä melko hyvä.
Kenelle peli on sitten sopiva?
1988Have you ever wanted to drive a Porche, a Ferrari or a Lambourghini? And have you ever looked enviously at the people who own one and said to yourself: One of these days, me too. Well, that day has now dawned - Accolade's Test Drive is ready.
The idea of the game is to test-drive cars from a car dealer's, and if you do the job well, the car is yours to keep. It's no easy job, and the winding road with its mountain walls and ravines makes sure of that. What's more, there are other crazy speed demons and inexperienced drivers on the road at the same time.
Naturally there's some crumpled sheet metal when you accidentally (or on purpose) drive into the mountain wall or an oncoming car, or plunge into a ravine. But then what happens? Just what usually happens to car dealers' test drivers: a cracked windscreen, speed down to zero and off you drive again. You'd have gleefully expected to see at least the car burning down in the ravine, or buried halfway inside the oncoming car, but no.
At the start of the game you get to pick the set of wheels of your choice. The game shows fine pictures of the cars and their technical details, such as acceleration figures, top speeds, tyre makes and braking distances.
The game gives you a good feel for the driving. The joystick acts as the steering wheel, and it also handles the gearbox.
Graphically the game is certainly pretty good. The cars are great, but the mountains and the road aren't. There isn't much music, unless you count the engine noises, the howling of the tyres or the loading music. But pointless music would only have spoiled the ride anyway.
So who is the game for, then? Pretty much anyone, really, but for anyone who likes sports cars and the Amiga, Test Drive is an almost essential purchase.
