Starglider II

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Starglider II

SG 2:n juoni on seuraava: Tehtäväsi on Icarus-aluksellasi saattaa Egronien valtakunta polvilleen keräämällä aurinkokunnan planeetoilta ja kuilta tarveaineita, joista sitten rakennetaan neutronipommi.

Amiga käyttää upeasti useita digitoituja efektejä hyväkseen, etenkin Stardriven jyminä siirryttäessä hyperavaruuteen (Warp one, Mr. Sulu!) on eri jylhä! ST:n äänipuoli on koneen mahdollisuudet huomioon ottaen hoidettu kiitettävästi.

Loppujen lopuksi on turha yrittää kuvailla SG 2:ta sanoin, menkää ostamaan se ja kokeilkaa itse!

1989 KevätIn 1986 Starglider was the first to give a foretaste of what the 16-bit machines are capable of. Around the time the game came out, its programmer, Jez San, claimed that the game couldn't be made any faster. By now plenty of games have already overtaken Starglider in development. So Argonaut Software struck back by releasing Starglider 2, equipped once again with the assurance that the 16-bits can't be programmed to go any faster than this. I'm gradually starting to believe it.

The plot of SG 2 is as follows: your mission, in your ship the Icarus, is to bring the Egrons' empire to its knees by collecting materials from the planets and moons of the solar system, from which a neutron bomb is then built. Every planet and its satellites has a strong Egron defence system, and most of the materials needed are hidden in underground tunnels, where navigating can be tricky without a map. SG 2 can be played either as an action adventure (the game has a highly useful save-game function) or as a normal shoot-em-up; in addition, the opening menu offers the option, instead of playing, of viewing all the figures found in the game and even doodling with them for fun.

As a showpiece of programming technique SG 2 is massive, and exemplary attention has been paid to detail. A complete three-dimensional universe has been created for the game, every object of which can be viewed from any angle. The filled vector graphics are astonishingly fast and smooth. The only visible (or rather audible) difference between the ST and Amiga versions (both versions load from the same disk, by the way, thanks to Argonaut's miracle format!) is the sound. The Amiga makes superb use of several digitised effects; the rumble of the Stardrive in particular as you jump into hyperspace (Warp one, Mr. Sulu!) is seriously majestic! The ST's sound side has been handled commendably, considering the machine's capabilities.

In the end it's pointless trying to describe SG 2 in words - go and buy it and try it for yourselves!
