Starglider

1987Paha, paha, paha Hermann Grudd on joukkoineen vallannut rauhaarakastavan Novenian planeetan ja vain yksi henkilö voi museosta löydetyllä Airborne Ground Attack Vehichlellä ampua alas Hermann Gruddin komentoaluksen Starglider I:n ja palauttaa konsensuksen Noveniaan. Ihan kuin olisin kuullut saman ennenkin.

Starglider! Tätä peliä on odotettu!

Ensin alkuun olin pettynyt.

Naputtamisen varaa silti on.

Nam!

Pikkuriikkisillä parannuksilla Stargliderista olisi tullut tosi klassikko. Aika näyttää minkä tason klassikko Starglider on.

1987Evil, evil, evil Hermann Grudd and his forces have conquered the peace-loving planet Novenia, and only one person, in an Airborne Ground Attack Vehicle found in a museum, can shoot down Hermann Grudd's command ship Starglider I and restore consensus to Novenia. Funny, it's as if I'd heard all this before.

Starglider! This is the game we've been waiting for! The thought of Empire Strikes Back on your very own machine, and in an improved edition at that, felt like a grand celebration. And then came That Day...

At first I was disappointed. The AGAV's aerodynamic properties left something to be desired, and death came quickly. Then I read the James Follett novella that comes with the game and learned what the name of the game is. There's no point playing Starglider without the instructions, since only they tell you where to dock for repairs, where on earth to get energy from and how to bring down Starglider 1, not to mention plenty of other things. I got hooked and played Starglider for hours on end. No sense breaking the streak once you get going.

There's still room for nitpicking, though. The AGAV flies stiffly, and the Commodore version has no option to pick a Star Wars-style sliding gunsight. What's more, Starglider lacks that famous depth, and it has, death and damnation, a high score table!

Starglider's graphics were advertised in advance as fast and flicker-free, and that, by golly, is what they are, even on the Commodore. The wretched dots meant to create the illusion of movement are a failure, but luckily the otherwise excellent vector graphics make up for it. The Stargliders in particular look splendid, and another big favourite is the Walkers, which stride across the planet's surface as if torn straight out of ESB. And the TV-guided missiles... Yum!

With teeny-tiny improvements Starglider would have become a true classic. But even in this form it trounces, on average, 95% of the other C-64 games and is worth its high price. Time will tell what calibre of classic Starglider is.
