1989 KevätYhdysvaltain historia on ollut SSI:n rakkaimpia ja tuloksellisimpia aiheita. USA:n sisällissodasta on tehty useita upeita pelejä kuten Gettysburg ja Shiloh, ja nyt sarjaa täydentää Rebel Charge at Chickamauga, joka kuvaa Etelän viimeistä suurta offensiivia. Sons of Liberty sijoittuu puolestaan USA:n perustamisen aikoihin ja sisältää kolme brittien ja jenkkien välistä taistelua.
Molemmat kuuluvat samaan pelisarjaan ja käyttävät samaa pelisysteemiä. Täten Battle of Antietamia, Gettysburgia tai Shilohia pelanneiden ei tarvitse kuin vilkaista ohjekirjaa, koska komennot ovat lähes identtisiä. Ainoat käytännön erot sarjan eri pelien välillä ovatkin vain pelimaastossa ja uusissa yksiköissä.
Käytössä olevat yksiköt koostuvat ratsuväestä, jalkaväestä ja tykistöstä. Näitä käyttäen tulee kussakin pelissä koettaa saada haltuunsa "kohteita" eli tiettyjä maastonpaikkoja, joista pelaaja saa rutkasti pinnoja.
SSI:n tyyliin ohjeet ovat perusteelliset. Laatikon mukana seuraavat tukevat ja värilliset kartat, paksu ohjekirja puhumattakaan vielä paksummasta taulukkoniteestä, johon on ympätty vielä novelli kyseisestä taistelusta. Jos päätä ei saa näistä kipeäksi, niin sitten ei mistään.
Pelaaminen on molemmissa peleissä varsin nopeaa. Levyasema tosin hurraa vähän joka välissä, mutta tauot ovat kuitenkin siedettävän pituisia. Kärsivällisyyshän on strategistille välttämättömyys.
Monipuolisuus on valttia tämän sarjan SSI-peleissä - käytössä on suurin osa näppäimistöstä ja mahtava on se tiedon määrä, joka pelaajan pitäisi pitää päänsä sisäpuolella. Ylivoimaista tämä ei kuitenkaan ole, huolimatta mahdollisista päinvastaisista arveluista.
Niin Sons of Liberty kuin Rebel Chargekin ovat upeita ja haastavia strategiapelejä, alansa valioita, joista ei kiinnostavuus pääse loppumaan pitkään aikaan.
1989 KevätUnited States history has been one of SSI's most beloved and most fruitful subjects. Several superb games have been made about the American Civil War, such as Gettysburg and Shiloh, and now the series is rounded out by Rebel Charge at Chickamauga, which depicts the South's last great offensive. Sons of Liberty, on the other hand, is set around the time of the founding of the USA and contains three battles between the British and the Yanks.
Both belong to the same game series and use the same game system. So those who have played Battle of Antietam, Gettysburg or Shiloh need do no more than glance at the manual, since the commands are nearly identical. The only practical differences between the various games in the series are in fact just the terrain and the new units.
The units at your disposal consist of cavalry, infantry and artillery. Using these, in each game you have to try to take possession of "objectives", i.e. particular spots on the terrain, which earn the player heaps of points.
In SSI style, the instructions are thorough. The box comes with sturdy colour maps and a thick manual, not to mention an even thicker volume of tables, into which they've also crammed a short story about the battle in question. If these don't give you a headache, then nothing will.
Play is fairly fast in both games. The disk drive does whirr away at pretty much every opportunity, admittedly, but the pauses are still of tolerable length. Patience is, after all, a necessity for a strategist.
Versatility is the trump card in this series of SSI games - most of the keyboard is in use, and colossal is the amount of information the player is supposed to keep inside their head. It isn't overwhelming, though, despite any suspicions to the contrary.
Both Sons of Liberty and Rebel Charge are superb and challenging strategy games, champions of their field, whose interest won't run out for a long time to come.
