Shiloh: Grant's Trial in the West

1988Yhdysvaltain sisällissota on saanut jälleen yhden uuden simulaation, Shilohin.

Samaten pelattavuus on hiukkasen noussut, vaikkei huomattavasti. Silti Shiloh on tyrmäävä.

Kuten tavallista alkumenussa on kovasti paljon mahdollisuuksia. Toimintoja on valtavasti.

Erikoisuutena pelissä on helpoimmalla vaikeusasteella tikun käyttö ohjaimena. Harjaantuneet ammattilaiset eivät moista käytä, koska näppäimillä peli sujuu nopsemmin, mutta aloittelijoille optio on todella hyödyllinen, koska he välttyvät jatkuvalta näppäimien muistelemiselta.

Grafiikoita on parannettu huomattavasti Gettysburgin ajoista.

Shiloh on tajunnan räjäyttävä. Vaikka pelaaminen ei kovin nopeaa olekaan, Shiloh tempaa mukaansa. Tai ehkä juuri siksi. Aivan kuin Gettysburgissa. Kun olet pelaamisen alkanut, et pääse eroon ennenkuin kaikki mahdolliset taktiikat ja skenariot (2) on hangattu läpi. Tätä nykyä lähes kaikki vapaa-aikani menee Shilohin parissa.

1988The American Civil War has got yet another new simulation, Shiloh. In the first of the great battles on the war's western front, the Southern states came close to crushing the Union troops. Now you have the chance to face history eye to eye, and see whether you would have been better at leading the troops, at winning on the side of the Confederacy. Or the other way round.

Shiloh uses the same system as the legendary Gettysburg, but it has been developed to an even higher level. Likewise the playability has gone up a notch, though not significantly. Even so, Shiloh is a knockout.

As usual, the opening menu offers an awful lot of options. You can set almost everything. And when you finally make it into the game itself, all you can do is marvel. There are a huge number of commands. At first you may have doubts about whether you'll ever learn them, but there's no difficulty in that. Especially if you've mastered Gettysburg. There's no point going into describing them, though; that would only be a waste of time. Suffice it to say that the units' actions are 100% realistic, and there is nothing about them you can't influence (except headlong flight).

A special feature of the game is that on the easiest difficulty level you can use the joystick as the controller. Seasoned pros won't touch such a thing, because the game goes quicker with the keys, but for beginners the option is really useful, since it spares them from constantly trying to remember the keys. You still have to read the manual, mind you, and if your grasp of English is on shaky ground, you'll either have to forget the game (in which case there's no point reading this any further either) or get help.

The graphics have been improved considerably since the days of Gettysburg. There, of course, they were still relatively simple, but in Shiloh the graphics are impressive. Perhaps even too impressive. On the sound side, however, everything is much the same as it has always been. Meagre.

Shiloh is mind-blowing. Even though the play isn't particularly fast, Shiloh sweeps you along. Or maybe precisely because of that. Just like in Gettysburg. Once you've started playing, you can't break free until every possible tactic and scenario (2) has been ground through. These days nearly all my free time goes on Shiloh.
