Salamander
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Itse asiassa Salamander on ehkä paras näkemäni shoot'em-up, kone kuin kone.
Bruttotuhovoima on uskomaton. Eikä pelattavuus tiputa grafiikan asettamaa rimaa, sillä koko peli tuntuu olevan suunniteltu pelaajan iloksi. Salamanderin ainoa heikko kohta on multiload, koska gameoverin koittaessa joutuu harmillisesti odottamaan minuutin pari.
1989 KevätOver the years I've seen so many different sideways-scrolling shoot-em-ups that only a rare few of us can be bothered to stay interested for more than a moment. So when I saw this new addition to the "collect the whole arsenal" games, I expected nothing more than "quite nice" from this descendant of Nemesis.
Golly, this child of man was wrong yet again. Instead of the standard mush, Salamander is a game that once again pushes back the phantom limits of Commodore 64 games. In fact, Salamander may well be the best shoot'em-up I have seen, on any machine.
I was sold rather quickly. Who could resist a spaceship that, inside half a minute, can boast three support craft and a whole bundle of punchy weapons? The gross destructive output is unbelievable. Just as unbelievable is the surreal background graphics, which offer such wonders as tentacles reaching out from the walls, teeth, jets of flame, walls that grow out at you, and myriads of other unbelievable enemies. The graphics are, after all, the work of Bob Stevenson himself. Nor does the playability knock down the bar set by the graphics, as the whole game seems to have been designed for the player's delight. Salamander's only weak point is the multiload, because when game over comes around you're annoyingly stuck waiting a minute or two.
Both as a game and as a feat of programming, Salamander is simply so good a game that it's hard to believe anyone could top it. Hopefully someone will at least try.
