1989 KevätPT-109 oli partiovene, jota toisen maailmansodan aikaan käytettiin pääasiassa valtavan Tyynen Valtameren vartiointitehtävissä. PT-109, kuten nimikin kertoo, simuloi tätä kuuluisaa venettä, jollaisella edesmennyt John F. Kennedykin on palvellut.
Päämäärä pelissä on selviytyä koko toisesta maailmansodasta paitsi hengissä myös kunnialla. Kunniaa kertyy upottamalla mahdollisimman paljon vihollisen aluksia, jonka japanilaiset Zerot, taistelualukset ja miinat pyrkivät estämään, toisinaan onnistuneesti. Sotaan voi valmistautua suorittamalla yksittäisiä partiointimatkoja ja harjoittelutaisteluja. Pelaaja on valmis kun hän osaa upottaa vihollisen laivasto-osaston päiväsaikaan ilman että häneen saadaan yhtään osumaa ja tietenkin korkeimmalla vaikeustasolla.
No, todellisuudessa japanilaisilla ei ole pienintäkään mahdollisuutta kun aito suomalainen astuu PT-109:n ohjaimiin. PT-109 tarjoaa pelaajalleen 40 solmun huippunopeuden, neljä torpedoa, tusinan raketteja, valikoiman kevyitä tykkejä ja syvyyspommeja. Tarvittaessa voi viholliselta piiloutua PT-109:n savugeneraattorin muodostaman savupilven taakse.
Pelissä on neljä vaikeustasoa, joista riippuu muun muassa kuinka tarkasti japanilaiset ampuvat, kuinka herkästi alus vioittuu ja kuinka helposti Nipponin pojat havaitsevat pelaajan veneen. Vaikeimmalla tasolla vene voi tottumattomalta pelaajalta upota alle minuutissa.
PT-109 on erittäin mukaansatempaava. Eikä ihme, sillä sen tekijä on Spectrum Holobyte, tuttu legendaarisista simulaatoreistaan Gato, Falcon ja Falcon A.T. PT-109 ei ainakaan laadultaan poikkea aiemmista tuotteista, joten voi oikeutetusti sanoa, että PT-109 on paras venesimulaattori kautta aikojen. Eipä silti ole pahemmin kilpailuakaan.
1989 KevätPT-109 was a patrol boat that during the Second World War was used mainly for guard duty on the vast Pacific Ocean. PT-109, as the name suggests, simulates this famous boat, the kind the late John F. Kennedy also served on.
The aim of the game is to get through the entire Second World War not only alive but with honour. Honour is earned by sinking as many enemy ships as possible, something the Japanese Zeros, warships and mines try to prevent, sometimes successfully. You can prepare for the war by carrying out individual patrol runs and practice battles. The player is ready when they can sink an enemy naval squadron in daylight without taking a single hit - and on the highest difficulty level, naturally.
Well, in reality the Japanese don't stand the slightest chance when a genuine Finn takes the controls of PT-109. PT-109 offers its player a top speed of 40 knots, four torpedoes, a dozen rockets, an assortment of light guns, and depth charges. If need be, you can hide from the enemy behind the cloud of smoke laid down by PT-109's smoke generator.
The game has four difficulty levels, which determine among other things how accurately the Japanese shoot, how easily the boat takes damage and how readily the sons of Nippon spot the player's boat. On the hardest level an inexperienced player can have the boat sink under them in less than a minute.
PT-109 is extremely gripping. No wonder, since it's made by Spectrum Holobyte, known for its legendary simulators Gato, Falcon and Falcon A.T. In quality, at least, PT-109 is no departure from the earlier products, so one can justifiably say that PT-109 is the best boat simulator of all time. Not that there's much competition, mind you.
