President Is Missing

Paketin avaamalla alkaa käsittää mihin on itsensä taas sotkenut. Sisältä löytyy ohjekirjojen lisäksi viesti tuntemattomalta lähettäjältä, audiokasetti ja neljä levypuolta täynnä dataa. Puuttuva Presidentti sananmukaisesti hukuttaa pelajan dataan. Koneella voi selata epäiltyjen henkilötietoja, erilaisia virallisia papereita, valokuvia ja tietysti salaisia tiedostoja, joihin pääsy vaatii koodin. Paljastuvia salasanomia varten löytyy koodintulkinta-apuohjelma ja epäiltyjen pidättämistä varten linja poliiseille. Kasetilta löytyy samomia, uutisia, nauhoituksia, puhelinkeskusteluja sun muuta sun muuta. Kuusnelosessa toteutus on erinomaista, lukuunottamatta yhtä outoa bugia.

President Is Missing on oikea namupala etsiväntyöstä haaveilevalle pelimiehelle ja muille raskaaseen aivotyöhön ihastuneille. Eteneminen pelissä vaatii erinomaista englannin kielen hallintaa ja valtavasti muistiinpanojen tekemistä, joten listoilla ei presidenttiä varmaan nähdä. Onpa joka tapauksessa vaihteeksi hauska kamppailla informaatiotulvaa vastaan hirviöarmadan asemasta.

1989 KevätThe year is 1996 and the President of the United States is Robert J. Matton. A by-election may be on the cards, however, because while the President was at talks in Lichtenstein, terrorists struck and kidnapped not only Mr. Matton but the leaders of other nations too, as a sort of bonus.

The player yanks on a special investigator's trousers and pretends to be sitting at a computer (that shouldn't take much imagination). The computer gives access to all the information that ought to reveal the culprits and the President's whereabouts. The terminal also puts you in touch with agents, who do the fieldwork on the player's behalf.

Opening the package, you begin to grasp what you've got yourself mixed up in this time. Inside, besides the manuals, there's a message from an unknown sender, an audio cassette and four disk sides full of data. The Missing President quite literally drowns the player in data. On the computer you can browse the suspects' personal details, assorted official papers, photographs and of course secret files, which need a code to get into. For the secret messages that come to light there's a code-breaking utility, and for arresting suspects a line to the police. The cassette holds messages, news reports, recordings, phone conversations and so on and so forth. On the C-64 the implementation is excellent, apart from one strange bug. If you want to look at a photograph and type the name wrong, the whole program goes haywire. Another rather nasty thing is the constant disk swapping, but that's probably unavoidable. On the ST and Amiga, playing goes very nicely with the mouse and disk swapping isn't a problem.

President Is Missing is a real treat for the gamer who dreams of detective work and for anyone else smitten with heavy brainwork. Getting anywhere in the game demands an excellent command of English and a huge amount of note-taking, so the President probably won't be turning up in the charts. Still, for a change it's fun to battle a flood of information instead of an armada of monsters.
