P.O.W.

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

P.O.W.

1989 KevätMistähän lienee P.O.W. lyhennys? Prisoner Of War? Poor man's Operation Wolf?

1989 KevätI wonder what P.O.W. might be short for? Prisoner Of War? Poor man's Operation Wolf? Who knows, but it does rather rile us red-blooded Americans, the way the enemy treats our boys who've been taken prisoner. So we'll send someone to bring them back and kill everybody along the way, especially anyone who whines anything about Rambo II.

The game consists of levels in which men, tanks, helicopters, monkeys and other creatures that are an essential part of the jungle ecosystem run around and shoot towards the screen. When they do, the bar representing the player's vitality shrinks until at some point it runs out and the player dies (but not for real, like, just in the game). By staying alive for long enough the hero gets to choose the next stage.

The shooting isn't one-sided, though: with the help of the mouse and to the accompaniment of extremely satisfying sound effects, the player can riddle heaps of enemy flesh with holes, as long as they take care not to hit the prisoners of war or the animals. That costs you points. The same technique is used to collect first-aid kits, ammo and rockets.

P.O.W. can also be played with the light gun Actionware markets, which I tried out in London, and it was fun. Not so much fun, though, that I'd arrive at a positive purchasing decision. It would have helped the game if the graphics had been polished a good deal more; they just do their job without exactly dazzling.

Sure, P.O.W. is a perfectly playable game, thanks to the digitised death screams and the rattle of the machine gun, but the 16-bit version of Operation Wolf looks promising enough that it's probably wise to hold your horses a while longer.
