Pandora

Pandora on todella iso alus.

Sukkulaan johtavan oven edessä on voimakenttä. Pelin ratkaisu on kokonaan pelaajan älykkydestä kiinni, hänen täytyy näet itse päättää mitkä tavarat kelpaavat todisteiksi.

Sykäyksittäin scrollaava pelialue on kuvattu viistosti ylhäältäpäin. Grafiikka on ainakin Amiga-versiossa todella selkeää.

Muuten ohjelmakoodi on moitteetonta.

Alkumusiikki on on tunnelmaan virittävä ja huolella tehty. Alkuruudun taustalla oleva tähtikenttä on todella upea. Äänefektit puolestaan ovat varsin tavanomaiset.

Pandora on vaikea peli.

1989 KevätThe spaceship Pandora was built in the 1990s. Its crew consisted of humans and droids. Its purpose was to keep the crew alive for the duration of a research mission lasting many years. The ship was controlled by a seventh-generation computer, Pandora, after which the ship had been named. Pandora's builders had set out to make a computer the like of which there was not and never would be. Something went wrong, however, and the spaceship sailed further and further away, and no more messages reached the surface of the Earth.

Now, in the 2100s, scientists have picked up Pandora on their radars again. It looks more and more certain that Pandora is no longer heading away from Earth but is coming towards it at accelerating speed. The panicked superpower leaders send a shuttle out to meet Pandora and find out whether it poses a danger to the planet.

The player's task, as Earth's representative, is to dock with Pandora and investigate the situation. If something alarming is afoot, the player must obtain evidence of the existence of a hostile life form.

As the game begins, Earth's envoy is standing at Pandora's docking point. The reception officer asks for identity papers, and since there aren't any, the envoy blasts the officer dead and takes their papers. There are several different kinds of identity papers, and they get you into different parts of the ship.

Pandora is a really big ship. There are a number of people on board as well as robots and droids, some of whom are already dead to begin with. The player can talk with the others, fight as far as their strength allows, and take whatever the dead were carrying. The items, that is the evidence, can be taken to the shuttle one at a time. You can also trade items with the others, which is why it doesn't pay to start a fight with everyone. Fights can be fought with bare fists or with some hand weapon. Pandora also has firearms, with which you can kill almost anyone.

There's a force field in front of the door leading to the shuttle. It opens when enough items have been collected, in other words when the game has been solved. The player has no way of finding out how far along they are. Solving the game depends entirely on the player's intelligence, since, you see, they have to decide for themselves which items count as evidence.

The play area, which scrolls in jerks, is viewed obliquely from above. The graphics, in the Amiga version at least, are really clear. All the objects look like what they are.

The one criticism you could make of Pandora's programming is that the characters' position detection could be more accurate. It's really annoying to lose your life to a force field that's a metre away. Otherwise the program code is flawless.

The title music sets the mood and has been made with care. The starfield in the background of the title screen is really gorgeous. The sound effects, on the other hand, are fairly ordinary.

Pandora is a difficult game. It's worth making a map of the play area. I don't recommend it to younger joystick-twiddlers. A command of English is also pretty important for understanding the conversations. But once you get inside Pandora, it keeps a tight grip on you until the riddle has been solved.
