Pacmania

1989 KevätVanhoista pelisankareista juuri Pacman on voimallisimmin tekemässä comebackia.

Pacmania on nykyaikaistettu Pacman-klooni. Ideana on edelleen kompata sokkeloita, syödä pillereitä ja väistellä pacdieetillä olevia haamuja. Voi haamuja, jos Pac ehtii napata voimatabun. Silloin syötävästä tulee syöjä, joka nirsona keltaisena pallona kuitenkin jättää silmät lautasen reunalle.

Onhan Pacmaniassa uuttakin.

1989 KevätOf all the old game heroes, it's Pacman who is making the most forceful comeback. After a long break Pac took the lead role in the pleasant Pacland, and now he returns a step closer to his roots in Pacmania.

Pacmania is a modernised Pacman clone. The idea is still to stumble around mazes, eat pills and dodge ghosts who are on a Pac diet. Woe to the ghosts if Pac manages to grab a power tab. Then the eaten becomes the eater, who, being a fussy yellow ball, nonetheless leaves the eyes on the edge of the plate.

There's something new in Pacmania too, of course. The graphics have been made three-dimensional and Pac can jump over a harassing ghost. The ghosts, for their part, have knocked back a bottle of Artificial Intelligence Vitonen (AIV) and put up tough resistance to Pac.

The graphics in the game are excellent, which is no wonder in itself, since they've been hoovered straight out of Namco's coin-op. The game fills the whole screen and perhaps for that very reason looks exceptionally good. Pleasant melodies accompany the pill-munching, so little by little the Amiga seems to be making good on its grandiose promises. The ST's graphics, fine as they are, don't reach the same level, because the play area is decisively smaller. Even on the C-64 Pacmania still looks good.

Pacman was actually a cracking idea in its day, since this simple idea still bites even now. How long it will keep its charm is another matter, so it's worth thinking it over before you carry your money to the shop for Pacmania.
