Crash Garrett

1989 KevätCrash Garrett on erilainen seikkailupeli.

Tarinaan on ujutettu vaarattomia pikkutuhmuuksia mieltä virkistämään.

1989 KevätCrash Garrett is a different kind of adventure game. The events unfold comic-strip style, and the graphics carry more weight than the parser that interprets the text. The story's gallery of characters appears as photo-like slices that splat onto the background complete with speech bubbles. The onomatopoeic sound pictures such as POW, BAM and CRUNCH look as if they had been torn straight out of the Dark Knight's own comic series. You can happily follow the game for long stretches without any pressing need arising to take an active part in the course of events.

The main character is Stonewall Garrett, who flies odd jobs in a single-engine light aircraft and gets innocently tangled up in a Nazi race-breeding project. The flying hero's nickname, Crash, describes in more than one way both how the game goes and the likely fate awaiting Garrett, plane and all, in the thick of the game.

Harmless little bits of naughtiness have been slipped into the story to refresh the spirits. Among other things, Garrett has trouble reaching an understanding with the lady passenger about which joystick ought to be used to fly the plane. And then what about the Fuel Ejection Button?

The graphics are in places superb and original. In its execution, the game's opening music is one of the best I've heard, and it sounds just like an honest-to-goodness real march-type thing. On the minus side, let the record show the idiotic parser and the speech-impaired synth that mumbles through Garrett's mouth and does duty as the prompt.

The game can be sincerely recommended to the slightly slow, and to those who read even their Aku Ankka comics eight times over before moving on to spelling out the text.
