1988Viimeinen vuoropari on menossa ja lyöntivuorossa on David. Hän on kuuluisa kantavista lyönneistään. Syöttäjänä on Brad, joka on joutunut tehtävään juoksunopeutensa takia. Brad juoksee kuin etana, mutta heittää tappavan kovia syöttöjä. Hän miettii hetken, heilauttaa sitten käsivarttaan ja pallo suhahtaa kohti lyöjää. PAM! Kierteestä huolimatta David osuu palloon ja sinkauttaa sen yläilmoihin syöksyen välittömästi kohti ykköspesää, vanhaa pahvilaatikkoa. Takakentän koppari Kitty juoksee kohti putoavaa palloa ja on juuri saamaisillaan kopin... mutta kompastuukin pensaaseen. Kittyn kömpiessä pystyyn David on jo menossa kakkospesälle. Kitty heittää pallon viimeinkin - miten käy? David heittäytyy kakkospesälle, joka on vanha auton rengas, mutta FLOP! Butch nappaa heiton kiinni vuorenvarmasti ja polttaa Davidin viime hetkellä.
Tällaista on baseball Epyxin uudessa Street Sports -sarjassa, jossa realismi saa aivan uudenlaiset mittasuhteet. Joukkueet muodostetaan kuudentoista erilaisen nuoren pelaajanalun joukosta. Jokaisella on oma persoonallisuutensa, kykynsä ja heikot kohtansa. Pelaajan tehtävä on muodostaa valitsemistaan pelaajista mahdollisimman onnistunut joukkue, jonka jäsenet on kykyjensä mukaan sijoitettu eri tehtäviin: hyvät kiinniottajat ja nopeat heittäjät pesille ja pitkiä kaaria viskovat pelaajat takakentälle. Pelaajien tuntemus auttaa joukkueen kokoamisessa ja strategiset valinnat lyöntijärjestyksessä saattavat olla avain voittoon tai tappioon.
Paitsi ideallaan SS Baseball loistaa myös toteutuksellaan, joka on huippuluokkaa. Pelattaessa jommalla kummalla kahdesta kenttävaihtoehdosta (nurmikko tai pysäköintialueen asvaltti) seurataan kentän tapahtumia kahdesta ikkunasta. Oikealla näkyy kenttä lintuperspektiivistä. Siitä voi seurata pelin kulkua kokonaisuutena. Vasemmanpuoleinen ikkuna kuvaa kulloinkin toiminnassa olevaa pelaajaa, joko syöttäjää ja kotipesää, ykköspesää, kakkospesää, kolmospesää tai takamiehiä.
Ohjaus on hyvin toimivaa ja peliä voi pelata joko kaveriaan tai tietokonetta vastaan. Peli aloitetaan heittämällä lanttia (tyylikäs animaatio) siitä, kumpi joukkueesta pelaa ensimmäisen vuoroparin sisällä. Voittanut saa myös valita ensimmäisen pelaajan ja sen jälkeen edetään vuorotellen, kunnes molemmat joukkueet on koottu. Toki on mahdollista valita myös levylle aiemmin valitut ja tallennetut joukkueet. Varsinainen ilonpito alkaa kuitenkin siitä, kun päästään itse peliin. Takapihan mestaruussarjassa jännitystä riittää siinä missä virallisessa pesäpallosarjassakin, vieläpä enemmän, sillä kaikenlaista voi pelin tuoksinassa tapahtua ja varmasti tapahtuukin.
Visuaalinen toteutus on erinomainen; kaikki pelaajat voi tunnistaa spriteistä ja animaatioon on kiinnitetty huomiota. Ääniä on suhteellisen vähän, mutta parempi niukalti onnistunutta kuin paljon epäonnistunutta. Epyx on jälleen tuottanut urheilupelien ystäville todellisen pakkohankinnan. Sarjaa jatkava Street Sports Basketball on jo valmis. Jään jännittyneenä odottelemaan sarjan muita osia, siihen asti valmennan junioripesisjoukkuettani.
1988The last inning is under way and David is up at bat. This batter is famous for long, carrying hits. The pitcher is Brad, who has ended up in the role because of running speed. Brad runs like a snail but throws deadly hard pitches. A moment's thought, then a swing of the arm, and the ball whizzes towards the batter. BAM! Despite the spin David connects with the ball and launches it sky-high, instantly dashing for first base, an old cardboard box. Outfield catcher Kitty runs for the falling ball and is just about to make the catch... but trips over a bush instead. By the time Kitty scrambles up, David is already on the way to second base. Kitty finally throws the ball - what will happen? David dives for second base, which is an old car tyre, but FLOP! Butch catches the throw rock-solid and puts David out at the very last moment.
That's baseball in Epyx's new Street Sports series, where realism takes on whole new proportions. The teams are picked from sixteen different budding young players. Each has their own personality, skills and weak spots. Your task as the player is to build the most successful team you can out of the players you pick, placing its members in different positions according to their abilities: good catchers and fast throwers on the bases, and the players who hurl long arcs in the outfield. Knowing the players helps in putting the team together, and strategic choices in the batting order can be the key to victory or defeat.
SS Baseball shines not only in its idea but also in its execution, which is top class. Whichever of the two fields you play on (a lawn or the asphalt of a parking lot), you follow the action on the field through two windows. On the right you see the field from a bird's-eye view. From there you can follow the course of the game as a whole. The left-hand window shows whichever player is in action at the moment: the pitcher and home plate, first base, second base, third base or the outfielders.
The controls work very well, and you can play either against a friend or against the computer. The game begins with a coin toss (a stylish animation) to decide which team bats first. The winner also gets to pick the first player, and after that you take turns until both teams are complete. Of course you can also pick teams that were chosen earlier and saved to disk. The real fun, though, begins when you get to the game itself. The backyard championship league has every bit as much excitement as the official baseball league, even more, since all sorts of things can happen in the heat of the game, and they certainly do.
The visuals are excellent; every player can be recognised from their sprite, and care has gone into the animation. There is relatively little sound, but better a little that works than a lot that doesn't. Epyx has once again produced a genuine must-buy for sports game fans. The next in the series, Street Sports Basketball, is already finished. I'll be waiting eagerly for the rest of the series; until then I'll be coaching my junior pesäpallo team.
