Platoon

Platoon jakautuu viiteen osaan. Ensimmäisessä on viiden sotilaan joukkueen löydettävä tiensä viidakon halki kylään.

Barnes vaatii viisi kranaattia ennenkuin sielu rääkyen siirtyy viimeiselle tuomiolle.

Platoon on ajatuksella toteutettu grafiikan vaihdellessa hyvästä erinomaiseen. Mukavaa on, että jokainen sotilas kestää neljä osumaa ennen siirtoa Taivaalliseen merijalkaväkeen. Kiitos lukuisten osien ei peliin pääse puutumaan (paitsi ehkä ensimmäiseen osioon). Musiikki on kuunneltavaa ja onpa mukana digitoituja huutojakin.

Platoon -The Movie oli pettymys, kiitos siloitellun Vietnam-kuvauksensa, höpöhöpö-filosofian ja klassisen hyvät-pahat -jaottelunsa. Platoon -The Game taas oli yllätys, toivoa sopii että Ocean jatkossakin malttaa pitää vähintäänkin tämän tason. Outoa silti vaikka sota riehuu ympärillä kuluttaa joukkue aikaansa WC:n etsimiseen. War is strange.

1988"The first casualty is originality" could be the motto of licensed games pretty much in general. And now Ocean, known for its licence flops, has grabbed hold of America's Unknown Soldier, Platoon. Can the result be anything but a flop?

Wonder of wonders, it can. Oliver Stone's overrated Vietnam soul-baring has surprisingly turned into perhaps the best game based on a film of all time.

Platoon is divided into five parts. In the first, a squad of five soldiers has to find its way through the jungle to a village. They have to find TNT so that the bridge leading to the village can be blown and a big Charlie unit doesn't slaughter the boys from the USA. From the village you get to the second section by finding the hut that leads into the Viet Cong's underground tunnel network. Here you fight the Cong's knife men and riflemen.

In the third section you sit in a bunker at night trying to put holes in the guerrillas creeping about in the dark. Flares light up the darkness, but there is only a limited supply of those too.

In the fourth part you charge through a guerrilla-packed jungle, M-14 blazing, towards a rendezvous with the helicopters. And in the fifth part the idea is to do in the evil killing-machine sergeant Barnes with the generous assistance of grenades. Barnes takes five grenades before that soul goes shrieking off to the Last Judgement.

Platoon has been made with thought, with graphics ranging from good to excellent. It is nice that each soldier can take four hits before being transferred to the Heavenly Marine Corps. Thanks to the many sections you don't get bored with the game (except perhaps with the first section). The music is listenable, and there are even some digitised screams.

Platoon -The Movie was a disappointment, thanks to its sanitised portrayal of Vietnam, its mumbo-jumbo philosophy and its classic goodies-and-baddies split. Platoon -The Game, on the other hand, was a surprise; let's hope Ocean has the sense to keep at least to this standard from now on. Strange all the same that while war rages all around, the squad spends its time looking for the toilet. War is strange.
