F/A-18 Interceptor
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Toteutus Interceptorissa on häikäisevä. Ponnetonta konetykkien ääntä lukuunottamatta Interceptorin efektipuoli on tosi massiivinen, varsinkin stereoiden kautta kuunneltuna.
Haaveet pommitusmatkoista saa unohtaa, sillä asevalikoima on vakio.
Erilaisia tehtäviä on kuusi: lentokoneen tunnistaminen, vahingoittuneen Airforce 1:n pakkolaskun suojaaminen, kahden varastetun F-16-hävittäjän pakottaminen laskeutumaan, pelastuspaketin tiputtaminen alasammutulle hävittäjälentäjälle, San Franciscoa kohti lentävän risteilyohjuksen tuhoaminen ja vieraan sukellusvenelentotukialuskombinaation (onpa hieno sana) upottaminen.
Jokainen skenaario on kuitenkin aika lailla samanlainen.
1988The Interceptor demo was what convinced me that I needed an Amiga. The long wait has finally been rewarded, and Bob Dimmerman's partially successful masterpiece is in my hands.
Interceptor's execution is dazzling. The graphics move quite nicely and a great deal of attention has been paid to detail. Interceptor may well be the first sim in which the landing gear actually folds away instead of just vanishing. The superb missile launches give a massive sense of power and might. And for once someone has known how to make use of the Amiga's sound potential. Apart from the feeble sound of the cannon, Interceptor's effects department is truly massive, especially when heard through a stereo. Owners of extra memory get a few more effects on top.
For armament the F-18 has a couple of Sidewinders, four AMRAAMs and a standard 30mm cannon. Unlike in Jet, the defences work. There are both flares and chaff, and as a bonus an ECM system too. You can forget any dreams of bombing runs, as the weapons loadout is fixed.
There are six different missions: identifying an aircraft, covering the emergency landing of a damaged Air Force One, forcing two stolen F-16 fighters to land, dropping a rescue package to a downed fighter pilot, destroying a cruise missile heading for San Francisco, and sinking a foreign submarine-aircraft-carrier-combination (now there's a fine word).
Every scenario is pretty much the same, though. They follow the "shoot something down, plus a couple of MiGs on top" formula, and since they're fairly easy you'll have played them all through within a week. Dinnerman would have done well to analyse Microprose's products to work out how to create a simulator with staying power. Another big minus is the lack of a modem play option.
Despite its flaws, Interceptor is nevertheless the state-of-the-art sim of the 16-bit machines, the one its successors will be measured against. A pity about the thin content; I expected a lot more.
