Buggy Boy
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews.
Porteista joissa lukee TIME saa lisäaikaa niinkuin voi hyvin olettaa.
Buggy Boy on todella hyvin toteutettu.
Buggy Boy on erinomainen arcadekäännös, jonka tapaisia kaivataan lisää. Tämän jälkeen autoilupelit eivät enää ole entisiään.
1988Elite is known for seeming to bite off more than it can chew with its arcade conversions. Taking the risk pays off, since almost without exception the company pulls it off superbly. But how will it go this time, given that the arcade Buggy Boy shows the track across three monitors and the graphics are as fast as they are varied? Is a home micro up to the same job?
In Buggy Boy you do what you'd expect to do in a car game, i.e. try to get round the track before time runs out. Unused time is converted into bonus points and extra time. Extra points come from driving through point gates and knocking down flags (pedestrians would have been a better idea).
Gates marked TIME give you extra time, as you might well expect. You can make your sand flea of a buggy hop by driving over a fallen tree, and driving over a rock or a stump puts you up on two wheels like K.I.T.T. in its best days. So that things aren't too simple, the track is full of rocks, trees, fences and so on and so forth, which you mustn't so much as drive into. There are five different, varied tracks, complete with tunnels, bridges and banked bends.
Buggy Boy is really well done. The excellent graphics scroll smoothly, the sound effects are good and the playability is tremendous. You can't tell the ST version from the arcade game, and even the C-64 version stretches the machine into whole new dimensions. Buggy has a good feel to the controls, it looks good and the difficulty is just right. The programming is careful and there don't seem to be any bugs in this boy. Then again, there aren't three screens either.
Elite takes the points home. Buggy Boy is an excellent arcade conversion, and we need more like it. After this, driving games will never be the same again.
