Peli on varsin paljon Gauntlet-tyyppinen temmellys, jossa pelastetaan tiedemiehiä onnettomuuden kohteeksi joutuneessa geneettisessä laboratoriossa. Laboratorio on tietysti täynnä inhoja surrealistisia hirviöitä.
Pelattavuus on huippuluokkaa välttämättömästä multiloadista huolimatta. Ainoa, mistä voi keppiä antaa, on hidas scrollaus, jonka ansiosta kärsimätön pelaaja on ruudun laidassa helppo saalis.
Edgen Ace-sisarmerkille Alien Syndrome on kelpo aloitus. Jos haluaa vilkaista miten peli olisi voitu pilata, kannattaa hankkia U.S. Goldin Shackled.
1988Converting coin-op games to the 8-bits is no easy job, as numerous failed attempts have shown. But the coin has a flip side too: graphics handicap notwithstanding, good and even excellent conversions do appear.
And with Alien Syndrome they've pulled it off. The game is very much a Gauntlet-style romp in which you rescue scientists from a genetics laboratory that has suffered an accident. The laboratory is, naturally, full of nasty surrealist monsters. Besides the scientists, the levels also hold more powerful weapons and maps with which you can locate the missing men (or women). It pays to hurry a little, since every level has a time limit. Clearing a level is rewarded with a fight against a big but, luckily, ugly creature. Simultaneous two-player play is possible, of course.
Real effort has gone into Alien Syndrome. The graphics are good, and in the case of the giant monsters one can even speak of "brilliant". The playability is top-class despite the unavoidable multiload. The only thing you can give it stick for is the slow scrolling, thanks to which an impatient player at the edge of the screen is easy prey.
For Edge's sister label Ace, Alien Syndrome is a decent start. If you want to see how the game could have been ruined, get hold of U.S. Gold's Shackled.
