Sai Combat

Sai Combat on näkemistäni karatepeleistä ensimmäinen, jossa on selostettu jopa kyseisen lajin taustaa, eikä pelkästään liikkeiden hallintaa näppäimistöltä. Juoni pelissä on varsin tavanomainen: taistele menestyksellisesti ja saavuta korkeampia vyöarvoja. Ainoastaan maisemat ja vastustajan laatu vaihtuvat, korkeammissa vyöasteissa tulee tosin pieniä yllätyksiäkin... Peliohjeissa ei juurikaan esitellä 18:aa eri liikettä, joista viisi liikkumiseen - kunhan nyt kerrotaan, mikä ilotikun asento vastaa mitäkin liikettä. Esimerkiksi The Way of the Exploding Fistissähän esitellään liikkeet oikein kuvien kanssa.

1987Like most Spectrum games, Sai Combat can be controlled from the keyboard or with various types of joystick. The joystick is clearly the best option, since in this game too the keyboard reading has been done a bit sloppily: after a tight bit of fighting, several keypresses can be left stored in the keyboard buffer to mess up your play later on.

There are no difficulty levels in the game, but you can start from where you left off in your previous game. You can also beat up your mate if you own a joystick - that way you needn't resort to real violence...

Of the karate games I've seen, Sai Combat is the first to explain even the background of the martial art in question, and not just how to control the moves from the keyboard. The plot is pretty run-of-the-mill: fight successfully and earn higher belt grades. Only the scenery and the calibre of opponent change, though at the higher belt grades there are a few little surprises too... The instructions hardly go into the 18 different moves, five of which are for moving around - they just about tell you which joystick position corresponds to which move. The Way of the Exploding Fist, for example, presents its moves properly, with pictures.

Sai Combat pays commendable attention to movement and to the authenticity of the blows. The characters move relatively smoothly. Whenever a character is hit, it reacts according to the force of the blow and where it lands, even collapsing to the ground for a moment. So different blows have different effects - just like in real life. Most of the techniques are genuine too, though the kicks, among others, are a bit stiff.
