Revs+

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Drokk!

Pelaajalla on mahdollisuus valita kuudesta radasta kaksi ajettavakseen.

Tietokoneen hoitaessa ohjauksen on pelaajan huolehdittava nopeudesta.

Revs+ on selvästi paras C-64:ään saatava kilpa-autosimulaattori. Jos pidät tämän tyylisistä peleistä, älä etsi kauempaa.

1987Into third gear and pedal to the metal. The Formula III shudders beneath me. The revs climb to 6000, begging for a higher gear, but the hairpin looms menacingly. I shift down and the engine howls. Even braking doesn't help and the left front tyre takes a bite of the grass. In that instant the car spins round, the horizon whirls before my eyes and the crash barrier wails as the heavy car rips it to pieces. There goes pole position. Drokk!

Revs+ is everything a novice formula driver needs. Revs came out a year ago and since then Firebird has been analysing feedback from players. Now Revs+ tries to plug even the gaps its predecessor left. More tracks, easier steering and the option of an analogue joystick are additions that make Revs+ almost perfect. The only thing I missed was the chance to design my own tracks.

The graphics do their job better than well. The laziness and sluggishness so typical of the C-64 seem to be missing, and you really feel the speed. The sound, though it seems crude at first, completes the atmosphere once you turn the TV up loud enough.

The player can choose two of six tracks to drive. On top of the old ones there are four new ones, programmed into the machine in precise detail with every bend, dip and climb. Going up a hill you catch yourself craning to see further, even though you know perfectly well it won't work.

CAS, Computer Aided Steering, is another addition that Firebird threw in at the players' demand. This makes the game easier without making it too easy. While the computer handles the steering, the player has to take care of the speed. Even the computer can't keep the car on the track if you come into a bend too fast.

Revs+ is clearly the best racing car simulator you can get for the C-64. If you like this kind of game, look no further.
