Rana Rama

1987Rana Rama on yksi markkinat täyttäneistä Gauntlet-kopioista. Niiden määrästä voisi päätellä kyseessä olevan ulkoavaruuden muukalaisten hyvin naamioitu maailmanvaltaussuunnitelma. Sammakoineen ja maagisine riimuineen Rana Rama sijoittuu sinne omaperäisempään päähän, eikä graafinen toteutuskaan ainakaan heti alkuun paljasta sylttytehtaan sijaintia.

Pelin jujuna on omaksua Mervyn-nimisen noidan oppipojan rooli.

Rana Rama on nähtävästi ohjelmoitu alun alkaen Spectrumille.

1987Rana Rama is one of the Gauntlet clones that have flooded the market. Judging by their number, you could conclude this is a well-disguised plan for world domination by aliens from outer space. With its frogs and magic runes Rana Rama sits towards the more original end of the scale, and the graphics don't, at least not right away, give away where the thing was really cooked up either.

The gimmick of the game is taking on the role of a sorcerer's apprentice named Mervyn. To his misfortune, the apprentice got his magic potions mixed up before heading out on a date and, instead of Dior aftershave, rubbed some gunk on his chin that turned him into a small, slimy-green frog.

A kiss from a witch girl might perhaps have helped, but what can you do when the evil wizards came along and left only Mervyn alive, because they took a liking to its ugly colour.

Mervyn now has to clear his home caverns of wizards and their helpers alike, so that he has even a chance of trying to find the potion that will turn him back into himself.

All the action is based on spells of different types and levels. Staying alive, 'zapping' the creepy-crawlies and anything else you care to name are all handled with spells. Spells can be cast with runes obtained from the wizards after some friendly persuasion, as long as you are standing on the right type of floor carving. There are floor carvings of other sorts too. Maps, travel from one level of the caverns to another and guaranteed total destruction are all on offer.

Rana Rama was evidently programmed for the Spectrum in the first place. That's how typically Spectrum-like the single-colour stick figures hopping about the screen look. The meagre sound effects point in the same direction too. Otherwise the technical execution is perfectly tolerable, apart from the fact that Mervyn doesn't respond to the joystick in the best possible way. Close combat with the wizards' helpers, along with the weapons flying through the air, can therefore turn into a problem, and a fresh energy spell into a necessity.
