1987Rails West on Strategic Simulations Inc:n pelien aatelia. Rails Westissä on pelaajien ohjattava Yhdysvaltojen rautateiden kehitystä 1800-luvun loppupuolella.
Pelissä on monia eri alkutilanteita ja pelitapoja. Aina on kyseessä todellinen historiallinen tilanne.
Jokaiselle pelaajalle annetaan pelin alussa 500-1300 dollaria. Rahat on osattava sijoittaa oikein.
1987Rails West belongs to the nobility of Strategic Simulations Inc's games. Unlike SSI's other games, this is not a war strategy game. This game demands a great deal more. In Rails West the players have to steer the development of the railways of the United States in the latter half of the 19th century.
The game has many different starting situations and ways of playing. It is always a real historical situation. The games differ in their length. The longest is the hardest and the most time-consuming. It covers the years 1870-1900. Slightly easier is the part covering 1890-1900, and the easiest is the period 1890-1895. All the options can be played at four different difficulty levels. There can be up to eight players, and the computer can, if you like, play in the name of four different companies.
Each player is given 500-1300 dollars at the start of the game. You have to know how to invest the money properly. At the outset there are already railway companies that own railway lines. If a player buys a majority of a company's shares, they can start running it. Shares are available on the stock exchange, which is of course part of the game.
At the head of a company you can do whatever you like, as long as the company can afford it. You can buy shares in other companies, build railways and raise the standard of your own railway's rolling stock. When planning future moves you must remember that a depression can strike out of the blue at any moment. When that happens, going bankrupt is all too easy.
The game never comes to a premature end. Good times always follow bad ones. For lack of money a player can end up unable to do anything, but even that state can be escaped in a few moves.
Taken as a whole this game is extremely interesting, since at every moment there are lots of different courses of action open. You have to know your strategy to make a fortune. The game also offers something other than the eternal attack on somebody or other. This game offers exactly what you expect from a real strategy game.
