Microrhythm

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Microrhythm

1987Firebirdin hopeasarjaan kuuluvat ohjelmat ovat yleensä hyviä, eikä Microrhythm poikkea linjasta. Tällä kertaa kyseessä on kuitenkin pelin sijasta rumpusyntetisaattori.

Kokonaisuudessaan Microrhythm on erinomainen ohjelma, jonka hankkimista suosittelen kaikille, joita kiinnostavat laadukkaat ohjelmat halpaan hintaan. Toivottavasti Firebird jatkaa samaa rataa.

1987The programs in Firebird's Silver range are generally good, and Microrhythm is no departure from the line. This time, though, it's a drum synthesizer rather than a game.

Microrhythm's sounds aren't some feeble clattering but digitized drum-pounding. Besides the sounds, the rest of the program is well made too, and there are plenty of editing options. The program runs entirely from the keyboard, so you can leave the joystick in peace.

Using the second row of keys from the top, you first make short snippets, which are then assembled into a longer whole - much longer, even several minutes long. You can wring no fewer than thirteen different sounds out of the Commodore 64, and you can add the so-called flam effect (meaning the sound is played twice in quick succession). The tempo can be changed separately for each of the shorter sections. On top of everything else that's good, the program even has a metronome, and once you hook your machine up to the stereo, torturing the neighbours on the other side of the wall is easy.

Microrhythm also has a real-time mode, which means you can bash the drums (...keyboard) to your own beat. But in real-time mode nothing is stored in memory.

Four songs can be in memory at once, and the demos already loaded into memory are quite impressive.

At first the numerous key functions may seem difficult, but after a while everything comes as if by itself. Naturally there are also save and load options, since otherwise your songs would vanish from the machine the moment the power goes off.

The instructions are short, but they contain all the information you need to use the program. All in all Microrhythm is an excellent program, and I recommend getting it to everyone who is interested in quality programs at a cheap price. Let's hope Firebird stays on the same track.
