Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1988Microrhythm plus edustaa Firebirdin Silver Range -halpaohjelma tuotantoa. Edeltäjänsä Microrhythmin tapaan tämäkin on rumpusyntetisaattori. Parannuksia on uuteen versioon tullut roimasti.
Ohjelma koostuu neljästä osasta jotka ainakin kasettiversiossa täytyy ladata kukin erikseen: Microlatin, Microdisco, Microvocal ja Microtune. Kaikki osat ovat rakenteeltaan samanlaisia, erot ovat vain rumpusoundeissa. Opittuasi siis käyttämään yhtä osaa, osaat käyttää myös kaikkia muita.
Rumpusoundit on muokattu digitoimalla. Kussakin osassa on 13 erilaista rumpukalausta, joita voi yhdistellä mielensä mukaan rumpukompiksi. Komppieditori on helppokäyttöinen ja sen käyttäminen on oikein kätevää. Ideana on muodostaa bareja, siis erilaisia komppipätkiä, ja yhdistellä sitten barit kappaleeksi song editorin avulla. Barit on numeroitu nollasta sataan. Kullekin Barille voi määrätä erikseen pituuden ja soittonopeuden.
Jokaiselle iskulle voi antaa jonkin 17 eri sävelkorkeudesta. Tämä on erittäin hyvä toiminto, sillä näin saadaan pitkiä tom-fillejä ja eri korkuisia rumpuja. Lisäksi jokaiselle iskulle voi määrätä kaiun, jolloin Microrhythm soittaa ta-tam pelkän tamin sijasta. Valmiin mestariteoksen voi tallentaa ja levylle, mutta valitettavasti kasettiversiossa ei ole levyasematoimintoja.
Microrhythmissä on rumpusoundeihin kiinnitetty paljon huomiota ja niinpä ne ovat erittäin luonnonmukaiset. Microlatinissa on digitoitu afro-soundeja. Microdisco tarjoaa jykevän discorumpusetin. Microtunella pystyy tekemään sävellyksiä, sillä sen soundit ovat bassoäänteitä, joiden korkeutta muuntamalla saadaan nuotit.
Kaikkein paras osa on kuitenkin Microvocal. Siinä on rumpusoundeina ihmisen sanelemia äänteitä. Microvocalia rumpatessani olin kuolla nauruun saatuani aikaiseksi hupaisia lauseita rytmin sekaan. Esimerkkinä mainittakoon seuraavat äänteet: Yeah, pau, hei, aah, ooh, tah, klonk ja hujap...
1988Microrhythm plus is part of Firebird's Silver Range budget software output. Like its predecessor Microrhythm, this one is a drum synthesiser too. The new version has had a hefty helping of improvements.
The program consists of four parts which, in the cassette version at least, each have to be loaded separately: Microlatin, Microdisco, Microvocal and Microtune. All the parts are identical in structure; the only differences are in the drum sounds. So once you've learned to use one part, you know how to use all the others too.
The drum sounds have been created by digitising. Each part has 13 different drum clatters, which you can combine into drum beats as you please. The beat editor is easy to use and really handy to work with. The idea is to build bars, that is, assorted snippets of beat, and then string the bars together into a song with the song editor. The bars are numbered from zero to a hundred. Each bar can be given its own length and playback speed.
Every hit can be given one of 17 different pitches. This is a very good feature, since it lets you get long tom fills and drums tuned to different pitches. On top of that, every hit can be given an echo, so that Microrhythm plays ta-tam instead of plain tam. The finished masterpiece can be saved, to disk as well, but unfortunately the cassette version has no disk drive functions.
A lot of attention has been paid to the drum sounds in Microrhythm, and so they are extremely true to life. Microlatin has digitised Afro sounds. Microdisco offers a beefy disco drum kit. With Microtune you can write compositions, since its sounds are bass tones whose pitch you change to get the notes.
The very best part, though, is Microvocal. Its drum sounds are syllables spoken by a human voice. Drumming away on Microvocal I nearly died laughing once I'd got hilarious phrases mixed in with the rhythm.
