1987Defender of the Crown on Cinemawaren klassinen elokuvamainen huippugrafiikkainen supersoundinen ja niin edes päin - peli, jonka Amiga-versiota on kuolattu siellä sun täällä.
Nyt tämä huipputyö on käännetty Commodore 64:lle. Tulos on erinomainen. Kuusnelkusta on tiristetty irti viimeinenkin tehonpisara.
Grafiikka on upeaa, äänet massiivisia ja animaatio hyvää. Kaikki Amiga-versiossa mukana ollut on mukana, mukaan lukien myös ylimainostettu Kiitollinen Nainen Läpinäkyvässä Yöpaidassaan. Ihmettelenpä vain, miten Amiga-Crown voi viedä kaksi 800-kiloista levya, kun Crown-64 mahtuu 340 kiloon.
Niille, jotka ovat onnellisen tietämättömiä Defender of the Crownista, kerrottakoon että siinä leikitään saksilaisruhtinasta ja yritetään vallata Englanti normanneilta. Mukana on taistelua, turnajaisia, katapultteja, kauniita naisia ja Robin Hood.
Peli on lähinnä strategiapeli, johon on joka väliin ängetty kauniita kuvia, animoituja jaksoja ja arcadeactionia. Kokonaisuus onkin lähes elokuvamainen. Tietysti muistinkulutus on karmea ja leivänpaahdin kolisee vähän väliä. Tämä tarkoittaa tietysti sitä, että kasettiversiota ei ole eikä tule.
Ja nyt asiaan: minä kuulun siihen niukkaan vähemmistöön, jonka mielestä Cinemawaren pelit ovat kauniita katsella ja kuunnella, mutta peleinä ne eivät ole aiheuttamansa kohun arvoisia. Strateginen osuus on aivan liian ylimalkainen eikä arcadeosuuksissa ole tarpeeksi vaihtelua että peliä jaksaisi pelata noin kertaa enempää.
No onpahan Defender Of The Crown ainakin hyvä demo siitä mihin kone pystyy, vaikkei siitä muuhun olisikaan.
1987Defender of the Crown is Cinemaware's classic cinematic top-notch-graphics super-sounding and so on and so forth - game, whose Amiga version has been drooled over here, there and everywhere.
Now this masterpiece has been converted to the Commodore 64. The result is excellent. Every last drop of power has been squeezed out of the C-64.
The graphics are superb, the sound massive and the animation good. Everything that was in the Amiga version is in here, including the overhyped Grateful Lady In Her See-Through Nightie. I do just wonder how the Amiga Crown can take up two 800K disks when Crown-64 fits into 340K.
For those who are blissfully ignorant of Defender of the Crown, let it be said that in it you play at being a Saxon lord and try to wrest England from the Normans. There are battles, tournaments, catapults, beautiful women and Robin Hood.
The game is basically a strategy game with pretty pictures, animated sequences and arcade action crammed into every gap. The whole thing is, indeed, almost cinematic. Naturally the memory consumption is horrendous and the toaster clunks away every few moments. This of course means that there is no cassette version, nor will there be.
And now to the point: I belong to that slender minority who think Cinemaware's games are lovely to look at and listen to, but as games they're not worth the fuss they have caused. The strategy side is far too sketchy, and there isn't enough variety in the arcade sections to make you bother playing the game more than once or so.
Well, at least Defender Of The Crown is a good demo of what the machine can do, even if it's no good for anything else.
