Battle of the Planets

1987Vanha kunnon Zoltar (kuka?) on keksinyt tuhota koko ihmiskunnan minun aurinkokunnassani, kertoo viesti... On aika hyvästellä rakkaimmat, postittaa muistokirjoitus lehteen, taputtaa Cobra Mk.

Jottei vihollinen kyllästy, tapan pari seuraavaa neutroniohjuksilla. Selatessani statusruutujani (suojakentät, moottorit, planeetta, ohjukset, laserit) huomaan suojakenttien olevan keltaisella ja onpa muutama vihollinen ehtinyt laskeutua kotiplaneetalleni tuhoten hulppeat 60 % asukkaista.

Battle of the Planets pohjautuu ohjeista päätellen Englannissa pyörivään tv-sarjaan. Mikään Elite II se ei ole. Onpahan kuitenkin erittäin hyvin tehty ja kulutusta kestävä ampumapeli, jossa on mukana ripaus realismia. BOP on valittu kilpailupeliksi "National Computer Games Championship" -kilpailuun, joten laatupelistä on kysymys.

1987Good old Zoltar (who?) has hit on the idea of wiping out all of humanity in my solar system, says the message... Time to say goodbye to my nearest and dearest, mail my obituary to the paper, give the Cobra Mk. III a pat and jump into the cockpit of the Phoenix fighter. Turbo to full and off into outer space! And what do we see out there? Incredibly good-looking enemy fighters done in wireframe graphics. A handy radar shows the positions of the enemies, the home planet and the hyperspace gate, so the nearest enemy goes in the sights, and at a press of the fire button my lasers trim Zoltar's wage bill. The poor wretch tried desperately to dodge, but it did him no good, no sir.

As in Elite, the enemies can take a varying number of hits, so I coolly hit them several times. FOMP! A circular fireball spreads out and I can carve a notch in the laser's grip. So that the enemy doesn't get bored, I kill the next couple with neutron missiles. Flicking through my status screens (shields, engines, planet, missiles, lasers) I notice the shields are on yellow, and what do you know, a few enemies have managed to land on my home planet, wiping out a whopping 60% of the inhabitants. So, set course for Xenath for repairs. The screen changes to the surface of the planet. On the planet are the tanker and repair ships, and this time, then, the enemy tanks as well, which, wonder of wonders, destroy me before I get the chance to save the remaining four planets.

Judging by the instructions, Battle of the Planets is based on a TV series showing in England. It's no Elite II. Still, it is a very well made, hard-wearing shoot-'em-up with a dash of realism thrown in. BOP has been chosen as a competition game for the "National Computer Games Championship", so this is a quality game we're talking about.
