Pelilaatikossa lukee huomiota herättävän pienellä tekstillä: WARNING - The game contains adult subject matter. Parental guidance is suggested. Onneksi eivät myyjäpoika eikä asiakkaana oleva 5-vuotias ymmärrä niin laajaa englanninsanastoa, joten pelilaatikon taustakuviin ihastunut pikkuvesseli pääsee pian installoimaan Larryn kovalevylleen.
Kyseessä on Sierran rahat-pois-köyhiltä-taktiikka, jossa vanhoja pelejä pakataan uusiin kuoriin. Mutta millaisiin kuoriin, siitähän tässä on kyse.
Larry supliikkimiehenä on saanut puhuttua upeat raamit ympärilleen, 256-väristä VGA-näyttöä taustalla myhäilevään Rolandiin asti. Larry todellakin näyttää upealta käsinmaalatun näköisissä hauskasti kallellaan olevissa maisemissa. Larry on itse hivenen vielä keski-ikäisemmän näköinen, hiusraja nousee edelleen, tosin ei samaa vauhtia kuin tarinan veistäjällä, Sierran Al Lowella.
Soundipuoli järkyttää: miten on alkuperäisestä Larry-biisistä saatu näin upea stereofoninen kokonaisuus. Musiikkivaraston laajuuteen pääset tutustumaan, kun vaihdat kaukosäätimellä siellä Tutussa Paikassa TV-kanavia, sillä joka kanavalla on omat soundinsa. Larryn olen myös nähnyt ja mikä parasta, myöskin kuullut CD-ROM-versiona, formaattina, jota kannattaa ehdottamasti suosia tulevaisuudessa. (Niinkö? Aika näyttää - Toim. kyyn. huom.)
Alkuperäisen version kysymystekniikka on tottakai alussa mukana. Viiteen oikein vastaamalla tai tietämällä näppäinkoodin pääsee varsinaiseen peliin sisään. Kysymykset toki ovat vaihtuneet.
Vanhat paikat, kasinot, diskot, baarit ja hotellit ovat paikallaan edelleen, mutta paljon, niin paljon on tullut tavaraa lisää. Uusia sisäpiirivitsejä tihkuu joka paikasta, vanhoista tutuista osa taas on muuttunut päinvastaiseksi alkuperäisestä. Vastaan tulee henkilöitä, lähinnä daameja, jotka todella elävät, puhuvat ja kävelevät. Laaja värimäärä tulee tässä hyödynnettyä: liha on oikeamman väristä.
Suurin muutos on tietysti ikivanhan tekstisysteemin muuttaminen täysin hiiriohjatuksi. Hiiripointteri muuttuu halutuksi toiminnoksi joko oikeasta hiirenkorvasta tai ruudun ylävalikosta. Ottakaamme esimerkiksi vaikkapa tuttu teksti Ken sent me. Luettuamme sen huussin seinältä se ilmestyy tavaroidemme joukkoon niin, että sen voi antaa ovisilmästä kurkistelijalle. Helppoa, mutta aikaaviepääkin, sillä tekstipätkä on pakko käydä ensin hakemassa.
Tässä muodossa Larry kelvannee entistä useammille, joten edessä on taas yöunien menetys.

The game box says, in attention-grabbingly small print: WARNING - The game contains adult subject matter. Parental guidance is suggested. Luckily neither the shop boy nor the 5-year-old customer understands that wide an English vocabulary, so the little rascal, smitten with the pictures on the back of the box, will soon get to install Larry on their hard disk.
This is Sierra's take-the-money-off-the-poor tactic, where old games are packed into new wrappings. But what wrappings - that's what this is all about.
Being a smooth talker, Larry has managed to talk himself into a splendid setting, from a 256-colour VGA display all the way to a Roland purring contentedly in the background. Larry really does look great in the hand-painted-looking, amusingly lopsided scenery. Larry himself looks a touch more middle-aged still, and his hairline is still receding, though not at the same pace as that of the man who spun the tale, Sierra's Al Lowe.
The sound side is a shock: how on earth did they get such a gorgeous stereophonic whole out of the original Larry tune? You get to explore the full extent of the music library when you flip through the TV channels with the remote in That Familiar Place, since every channel has its own sounds. I've also seen Larry, and best of all heard it too, as a CD-ROM version, a format that's definitely worth favouring in the future. (Is that so? Time will tell - cynical ed. note.)
The original version's quiz technique is of course there at the start. Answer five correctly, or know the key code, and you get into the game proper. The questions have changed, mind you.
The old places, the casinos, discos, bars and hotels, are all still where they were, but a lot, oh so much, new stuff has been added. New in-jokes seep out of every corner, while some of the old familiar ones have been turned into the opposite of the original. You meet characters, mostly dames, who really live, talk and walk. The wide range of colours gets put to good use here: the flesh is a truer colour.
The biggest change, of course, is that the ancient text system has been turned into a fully mouse-driven one. The mouse pointer changes into the action you want, either from the right mouse button or from the menu at the top of the screen. Let us take as an example the familiar phrase Ken sent me. Once we've read it off the wall of the loo, it appears among our belongings so that it can be handed over to the one peering through the peephole. Easy, but time-consuming too, because you have to go and fetch the snippet of text first.
In this form Larry should appeal to more people than ever, so there are sleepless nights ahead again.
