Last Ninja 2

1990 SyksyKasibittisille joskus ennen sotia väännetty viimeinen ninja New Yorkissa on sitten vihdoinkin kammettu kuusitoistabittiseen muotoon.

1990 SyksyThe last ninja in New York, knocked together for the eight-bits sometime back before the wars, has now finally been cranked into sixteen-bit form. Was all that bother worth it? This product ought to be in the archive of former greats by now.

If the two instalments of last-ninja-ing aren't already familiar to you, let's recap just this much: it's an action adventure seen from a diagonal overhead viewpoint, in which a black-clad ninja man boots villains around and rummages in the bushes for throwable throwing stars and who knows what junk to help him out.

LN2 is well thought out, but the enjoyment is taxed by an awkward control system. The direction the hero's mug is facing is changed step by step by rotating the stick's handle, which feels really clumsy in the thick of close combat. Another amusing nuance is picking up objects by pressing the button and wrenching the handle diagonally down. The objects could perfectly well be picked up just by touching them, a technique used by 99.9 per cent of games. In some cases the fellow also has to be lined up with pixel precision, if only you knew which pixel. After I'd tried to pick a stick up off the ground for a quarter of an hour, there was one seriously fed-up man fuming at the end of the joystick.

There's variety in the game's backdrops by the bucketload, but really the graphics have hardly been improved on the eight-bit versions. There are a few more colours, but the impression is a bit rough and unfinished. The same goes for the feel of the controls. In the fist fights especially, the ninja responds to the joystick when he happens to be in the mood.

So maybe the game is inventive, versatile and other things of that sort, but it could have been made a lot more enjoyable.
