Domination
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1990 SyksyDomination on erikoislaatuinen pelityylien sekasotku.
1990 SyksyDomination is a peculiar hodgepodge of game styles. At first glance it looks like a skill game along the lines of Marble Madness, Spindizzy and other abstract ball-rolling games, but in fact it's a tactical war game in which the aim is to destroy the opponent's headquarters. Each player has half a dozen droids, one of which you can control, while the others are assigned to preprogrammed patterns such as attack, defence or rest.
On paper the idea looks brilliant, but something is badly wrong. During a long gaming session I sifted through several levels, won a few rounds, upgraded droids with extra equipment and generally spent some theoretically fun moments, but to be honest it wasn't any fun at all; in fact I nearly bored myself to death. For some reason the idea doesn't work in practice.
After lengthy analysis I've come to the conclusion that the reason must be the amateurishness peeking out of every crack in the game. The disgustingly smeary graphics can be forgiven, especially since the playfield at least scrolls acceptably smoothly in every direction, but everything else is more or less dodgily implemented. Since the droids fire at such a yawn-inducingly relaxed tempo, the screen could at least show when the gun is ready for another round. Surely the computer's droids could, even on the easiest level, behave at least seemingly sensibly, instead of leaping over the edges into the void. It would be nicer if you could hand out the equipment you've earned to your droids in peace, rather than stressed out by an absurd time limit. And so on and so forth: there's some little thing to complain about in almost everything.
A good idea badly executed equals a mediocre game.
