Abrams Battle Tank
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1989 SyksyPanssarivaunupelit tuntuvat olevan nykyisin muodissa, sillä tämän Electronic Artsin/Dynamixin pelin lisäksi vastaavia on tulossa Accoladelta, Realtime Softwarelta ja Spectrum Holobyteltä.
1989 SyksyTank games seem to be in fashion these days, since besides this Electronic Arts/Dynamix game, similar ones are on the way from Accolade, Realtime Software and Spectrum Holobyte. ABT is a traditional tank game, viewed from the cockpit, and it uses three-dimensional filled vector graphics.
The player gets to choose from a handful of missions that, when all is said and done, are pretty similar, and are geographically set in Central Europe. One time you have to destroy a bridge, another time you have to guard a factory. You can also pick the so-called World War Three scenario, in which all the missions come back to back.
Before the mission starts, the player finds themselves and their best friend (the Abrams tank) at the depot, where you have to pick a suitable selection of ammunition and decide whether or not you need the rev limiter. The right ammo stock is vital, because the moment a pack of Soviet tanks comes at you and you've got ONLY the wrong kind of shells in store, even a tougher-than-average guy easily finds himself thinking of his mum. The rev limiter slows your progress, but stops the engine from blowing up as a result of overheating.
The graphics. Well, the usual story: the zippier and more powerful the PC, the zippier and prettier the graphics. EGA is perfectly OK, but Hercules is of course awful. To Dynamix's credit, let it be said that ABT is quite playable even on a slow PC. Don't expect anything new from the sound, since the PC can only manage its BEEP noise, unless the programmer can be bothered to fiddle for days on end with playback routines for digitised sounds. In this case they couldn't be bothered.
ABT is a perfectly passable but somewhat dull and simple tank "simulation". Simulator fans should wait for the tank games from Realtime and Spectrum Holobyte.
