1988Sekalaiset ja -laatuiset ajatukset täyttivät mieleni, kun sain eteeni Leaderboard-sarjan ties kuinka monennen osan, jonka ylipitkä nimi komeilee otsikkona. Oliko tätä tarpeen tehdä, koska mikrogolffareilla on jo kaapit pullollaan golf-pelejä, joista useimmat ovat Carverin veljesten tuotoksia? Mitä uutta tämä sarjan viimeinen tarjoaa, jotta minäkin heltyisin hellittämään kukkaronnyörejäni uhratakseni killinkini Accessille?
Uusin Leaderboard on täysin aiemman World Class Leaderboardin tasoa ja ainoa ero on valmiissa kentissä. WCL-sarjassa kentät on pyritty saamaan mahdollisimman paljon todellisia esikuvia vastaaviksi. Volume 1 sisältää kolme tunnettua rataa, jotka ovat Colonial Country Club Texasista, Pebble Beach Kaliforniasta ja Muirfield Brittein saarilta. Koska nämä nimet eivät golf-fanaatikoille kuitenkaan riitä ovat Carverit koodanneet jälleen mukaan oman spesiaaliratansa Glenmooren, joka on tarkoitettu haasteeksi kokeneille Leaderboardin pelaajille.
Leaderboardit ovat aina olleet golf-simulaatioiden kärkeä huippuunsa vietyine animaatioineen ja tyylikkäine kolmiulotteisine maisemanpiirtorutiineineen. WCL-sarjan pelit ovat paranneltuja painoksia ensimmäisistä Leaderboardeista ja niissä on sekä puttausten että pitkien lyöntien harjoittelumahdollisuudet, lyönnin suunnittelua suuresti helpottava top view -optio (näyttää radan lintuperspektiivistä) ja matalan lyönnin valinta eli ns. Punch Shot. Jos haluaa todistaa kavereilleen kovan tuloksensa, voi siitä ottaa kirjoittimella hard copyn.
WCL-peleissä voi lisäksi järjestellä valmiit reiät haluamaansa järjestykseen ja suunnitella näin omia ratoja. Lähes kaikkea on siis mukana ja ainoa mitä voi vielä golf-peliltä toivoa, on täydellinen reikäeditori, jolla voisi itse luoda reiätkin puineen, hiekkakuoppineen ja vesialueineen. Ehkäpä täydellinen Leaderboard Construction Set tulee aikanaan.
Kuusneloselle ei ole parempaa golf-simulaatiota tehty. Etenkin usean pelaajan pelinä Leaderboard on todella nautittava elämys.
Ylisanoja on turha säästellä, mutta... jos omistat jo World Class Leaderboardin, miksi ostaisit WCL Famous Courses Vol1:n? Vastaus: ainoastaan siinä tapauksessa, että olet intohimoinen golfpelaaja, joka on hankkinut kuusnelosen sadepäiviä varten. Vol2 on kuulemma sekin jo myynnissä ja siihen pätenee sama periaate. Jos taas olet ensimmäistä kertaa ostamassa golf-peliä kuusneloseen, valitse vapaasti ihan mikä tahansa maailmanluokan Leaderboardeista. Pidä kuitenkin huoli siitä että hankit levykeversion, sillä kasettiversiot eivät sisällä läheskään kaikkia toimintoja.
1988Mixed and motley thoughts filled my mind when I was handed the umpteenth instalment of the Leaderboard series, whose overlong name sits proudly up there as the headline. Was this really necessary, when micro-golfers already have cupboards bursting with golf games, most of them the handiwork of the Carver brothers? What does this latest in the series offer that's new, so that even I might soften up enough to slacken my purse strings and sacrifice my shillings to Access?
The newest Leaderboard is fully up to the standard of the earlier World Class Leaderboard, and the only difference is in the ready-made courses. In the WCL series the aim has been to make the courses match their real-life models as closely as possible. Volume 1 contains three famous courses: Colonial Country Club from Texas, Pebble Beach from California and Muirfield from the British Isles. Since these names still aren't enough for golf fanatics, the Carvers have once again coded in a special course of their own, Glenmoore, which is meant as a challenge for experienced Leaderboard players.
The Leaderboards have always been at the very top of golf simulations, with their animation taken to the limit and their stylish three-dimensional landscape-drawing routines. The games in the WCL series are improved editions of the first Leaderboards, and they include practice options for both putting and long shots, a top view option that makes planning your shots much easier (it shows the course from a bird's-eye view), and a low-shot option, the so-called Punch Shot. If you want to prove your hot score to your mates, you can run off a hard copy of it on the printer.
In the WCL games you can also put the ready-made holes in whatever order you like and so design your own courses. So nearly everything is in there, and the only thing left to wish for from a golf game is a complete hole editor that would let you create the holes themselves too, with their trees, bunkers and water hazards. Maybe a complete Leaderboard Construction Set will come along in due course.
No better golf simulation has been made for the Commodore 64. Especially as a multiplayer game, Leaderboard is a truly enjoyable experience.
There's no point holding back on the superlatives, but... if you already own World Class Leaderboard, why would you buy WCL Famous Courses Vol1? Answer: only if you're a passionate golfer who has got a Commodore 64 for rainy days. Vol2 is reportedly already on sale too, and the same principle presumably applies to it. If, on the other hand, you're buying a golf game for the Commodore 64 for the first time, feel free to pick absolutely any of the world-class Leaderboards. Do make sure, though, that you get the disk version, because the cassette versions don't have anywhere near all the features.
