Thunderchopper
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1988Thunderchopper on Actionsoftin haaste Microprosen kuuluisalle Gunshipille. Firman agressiivinen mainonta mollaa Microprosea joka käänteessä, mm. TC:n mainostetaan olevan edistynein kopterisimulaattori mitä koskaan on tehty. Eivät suuret sanat suuta halkaise, joten tutkitaanpa tuotetta.
Simuloinnin kohteena on Hughes 530MG Defender. Kopteri on aseistettu 30 mm:n tykillä, optisesti ohjatuilla TOW-ohjuksilla, lämpöhakuisilla Stingereillä ja ohjaamattomilla Zuni-ohjuksilla.
Tehtäviä on vain viisi: lentoharjoittelua, lentäjien pelastusta, taisteluharjoittelua, saattueen suojaamista ja lentäjien pelastamista merestä taisteluoloissa. Vaikeusasteen muuttaminen aiheuttaa hiukan vaihtelua, mutta Gunshipin satoihin tehtäviin on pitkä matka.
Thunderchopperin grafiikka on periaatteessa realistisempaa kuin Gunshipissä, kiitos Sublogicilta lisenssoidun 3D-grafiikan. Hintana on tietysti hitaus. TC lentää nykien, mutta kuitenkin nippanappa siedettävästi. Vakavampi asia on kuitenkin ruudun ulkoasu. Ensinnäkin värivalinnat ovat onnettomat. Maastosta on telkkarista vaikea saada selvää ja kaikki tähtäimet yms. hukkuvat taustaan. Myös mittaristo vaatii tarkkaa tutkailua.
Thunderchopperilla on paljon vaikeampi lentää ja taistella kuin Gunshipilla, vaikka kaikki kontrollit onkin keskitetty ilotikkuun. Syynä on lähinnä hidas kuvaruudunpäivitys.
1988Thunderchopper is Actionsoft's challenge to Microprose's famous Gunship. The company's aggressive advertising knocks Microprose at every turn; among other things, TC is advertised as the most advanced helicopter simulator ever made. Talk is cheap, so let's examine the product.
The aircraft being simulated is the Hughes 530MG Defender. The chopper is armed with a 30 mm cannon, optically guided TOW missiles, heat-seeking Stingers and unguided Zuni missiles.
There are only five missions: flight training, pilot rescue, combat training, convoy escort and rescuing pilots from the sea under combat conditions. Changing the difficulty level brings a little variety, but it's a long way from Gunship's hundreds of missions.
Thunderchopper's graphics are in principle more realistic than Gunship's, thanks to 3D graphics licensed from Sublogic. The price, of course, is slowness. TC flies jerkily, but still just about tolerably. A more serious matter, though, is the look of the screen. For one thing, the colour choices are dreadful. The terrain is hard to make out on a telly, and all the gunsights etc. get lost in the background. The instruments, too, need close scrutiny.
It's much harder to fly and fight with Thunderchopper than with Gunship, even though all the controls are concentrated on the joystick. The main reason is the slow screen update. Of course, after you've been flying the 16-bit Gunship for weeks on end, TC's graphics may look even slower than they really are. What is annoying, though, is constantly crashing into hills, since the distance to them is really hard to judge.
Colonel Jack can jolly well pipe down: Thunderchopper is no match for Gunship. In its own class, though, Thunderchopper is a decent heli simulator, but it really is worth a test flight before buying, especially if you have no experience of your own with Sublogic graphics on the Commodore 64.
