Shackled

1988Pahat voimat ovat vanginneet ystäväsi salaperäisen linnan syövereihin. Sinun pyhä tehtäväsi ystävyyden yms. nimissä on pelastaa tämä reppanajoukkue, ennenkuin kuolemaakin pahempi kohtalo lankeaa heidän osakseen. Linnassa on muutama sata kerrosta, joissa jokaisessa on useampi kamu kahleissa.

Game on over kun elinvoima laskee nollaan.

Aloitin tutustumisen kuusnelosversiosta. Hyvin nopeasti toivoin, että olisin polttanut koko kirotun kasetin. Grafiikka on hirveää.

1988Evil forces have imprisoned your friends in the depths of a mysterious castle. Your sacred duty, in the name of friendship etc., is to rescue this sorry bunch before a fate worse than death befalls them. The castle has a few hundred floors, each of them with several pals in chains. By the rules of mathematics that comes to somewhere around a thousand friends. Throwing parties could get expensive.

Shackled is, as you can probably tell from the picture, one of those Gauntlet/Alien Syndrome clones. A rescued friend nets you better weapons, and you can also collect various amulets and keys. It's game over when your life force drops to zero.

I started getting acquainted with it on the Commodore 64 version. Very quickly I was wishing I'd burned the whole cursed cassette. The graphics are dreadful. The sprites are incomprehensibly badly animated, nauseatingly bad lumps, and nobody can make out what they're supposed to be. The bad background scrolls worse than anything ever seen before, and the 'action' slows down as the number of sprites grows. A botched tune croaks away in the background.

With low expectations I loaded the ST version into the machine. After the brilliant Gauntlet II conversion, the ST Shackled felt exactly as miserable as the C-64 version. At least you could make out the graphics; nothing else positive comes to mind.

It's beyond comprehension that U.S. Gold can be bothered to release rubbish like this at full price. Steer well clear.
