Mini Putt

1988Accoladella tuntuu olevan pakonomainen tarve tehdä aina jotain sellaista mitä muut eivät ole tehneet tai sitten ainakin paremmin kuin kukaan muu. Aivan kuin parodioidakseen golfpelien tulvaa, Accolade julkaisi Mini-puttin.
Mini-putt on pienoisgolf varustettuna huumorilla, tai ainakin yrittää olla. Humoristinen siis. Huumoripuoli tuppaa jäämään vähän heikoksi, kun sitä yrittää kehittää vain ruudun nurkassa pomppiva golffari. Yksinpelinä Mini-puttia pelaa jonkin aikaa aivan huvikseen, mutta lopulta innostus katoaa. Jostain syystä jotakuinkin samaan aikaan kun kaikki radat on pelattu läpi.
"Mitä enemmän pelaajia, sitä hauskempaa" pitää kuitenkin paikkansa tälläkin kertaa. Jotkut radoista on suunniteltu kerrassaan nerokkaasti ja ne tuottavatkin suunnatonta riemua isomman ryhmän ollessa paikalla.
Teknisestä toteutuksesta täytyy kai myös kertoa. Grafiikka ei saa aikaan pyöristyneitä silmiä tai hämmästyksestä lerpahtaneita alahuulia, mutta Accoladelle ominaiseen tyyliin animaatiota on käytetty paljon. Musiikkia ei ole riesaksi asti ja äänitehosteetkin rajoittuvat puttauksen ääneen ja pallon kolinaan pitkin reiän reunoja.
Kiinnostavuus onkin aika suhteellinen asia, koska yksin pelattaessa vaikeutta ei tunnu löytyvän tarpeeksi eikä mukana ole myöskään kilpailemisen tunnetta. Mutta heti kun pelaajia on enemmän kuin yksi, alkavat kellon viisarit lentää ja radat tulee pelattua läpi monta kertaa peräkkäin.
Kasetilta ladattaessa jokaisen reiän lataaminen erikseen ei ole järin miellyttävää, mutta Accolade on ilmeisesti halunnut jättää mahdollisuuden lisäradoille. Eli eiköhän myyntiin tule pian Mini-putt Course Construction Set.
1988Accolade seems to have a compulsive need to always do something nobody else has done, or failing that, at least to do it better than anybody else. As if to parody the flood of golf games, Accolade released Mini-putt.
Mini-putt is minigolf equipped with humour, or at least it tries to be. Humorous, that is. The humour side tends to stay a bit thin when the only thing trying to generate it is a golfer bouncing around in the corner of the screen. As a one-player game you'll play Mini-putt for a while just for the fun of it, but in the end the enthusiasm vanishes. For some reason at more or less the same moment all the courses have been played through.
"The more players, the merrier" still holds true this time, though. Some of the courses are designed downright ingeniously, and they generate enormous glee when a bigger crowd is on hand.
I suppose I ought to say something about the technical side too. The graphics won't produce saucer eyes or lower lips drooping in amazement, but in typical Accolade style a lot of animation has been used. There isn't so much music as to become a nuisance, and the sound effects are limited to the sound of the putt and the ball rattling around the rim of the hole.
Interest, then, is a rather relative matter, because played alone there doesn't seem to be enough challenge, nor is there any sense of competition. But as soon as there's more than one player, the hands of the clock start flying and you end up playing through the courses many times in a row.
When loading from cassette, having to load every hole separately isn't exactly pleasant, but Accolade has evidently wanted to leave the door open for extra courses. So I'd expect a Mini-putt Course Construction Set to be in the shops before long.
