Sanxion

1987On aika laittaa Finlandia-hymni levysoittimeen, sillä ensimmäinen suomalaispeli on valloittanut maailman.

Graafisesti Sanxion on parhaan näköinen ampumispeli jota kuuna päivänä olen nähnyt. Jopa Uridium jää hopealle, eikä syynä ole kansallistunteen sumentamat silmät. Tekninen toteutus on huippuluokkaa. Pelattavuus on huima, joten voitaneen väittää uuden klassikon syntyneen. Hyvin tehty, Stavros Fasoulas, tietokonepelien Paavo Nurmi.

1987Time to put the Finlandia hymn on the record player, because the first Finnish game has conquered the world. The game in question is Sanxion, and the blue-cross flag of Finland is surely already flying from Thalamus's flagpole, because Sanxion was a hit from the moment it was born. Maybe now Finland will become known for something besides the Chernobyl fallout that came down on it.

Sanxion's plot feels very contrived, but the game itself is an honest killing game with no grand philosophies to speak of.

The outer-space aliens threatening Earth must be beaten back, and in the spirit of the Winter War they are beaten back. The screen is divided into two parts, the upper one serving as an early-warning screen that shows the approaching enemy armadas. The lower one is, naturally, where the actual slaughtering gets done. Between each attack wave there's a kind of training ground, where you also shoot, crash into things and pick up bonuses.

Graphically Sanxion is the best-looking shoot-'em-up I have seen in all my born days. Even Uridium has to settle for silver, and it's not because my eyes are clouded by national pride. The technical execution is top class. The three-dimensional, so-called parallax scrolling is fast and completely jerk-free, and the ship obeys the joystick in exemplary fashion. The sound is excellent, both David Whittaker's effects and Rob Hubbard's tunes, though at least one of those tunes should still have been Porilaisten marssi. The playability is tremendous, so it's probably safe to say a new classic has been born. Well done, Stavros Fasoulas, the Paavo Nurmi of computer games.
