Nosferatu the Vampyre

1987Kun lisenssikuume iskee kaivetaan ruumiitkin haudoistaan.

Nosferatu on toteutettu Ultimaten aikoinaan promotoimalla kolmiulotteisella grafiikalla.

Vampyyreistä kiinnostuneiden kannattaakin sijoittaa markkasensa Stephen Kingin kirjaan Salem's Lot, joka on mainio esimerkki miten kuluneesta aiheesta imetään tuoretta verta.

1987When licence fever strikes, even corpses get dug out of their graves. This time, though, the corpse belongs to the sort that is quite happy to rise without any help.

Nosferatu is a vampire, and the game about him is a "good" old action adventure. Jonathan Harker has to escape from Nosferatu's castle, then Lucy's life is in the hands of Harker and Van Helsing, and in the final part Lucy has to show the old bloodsucker a sunrise. This aesthetic experience naturally kills Nosferatu.

And there you have the moral of the story: if you gad about till all hours and drink too much, the morning sun can kill you. So true, so true...

The dangers include rabid dogs, bloodthirsty bats and poisonous spiders, not to mention villagers whom Nosferatu's bite has already turned into vampires.

Nosferatu is done in the 3D graphics that Ultimate championed back in the day. And that is where the problems start: the Commodore 64 isn't fast enough if there is more than one moving character on screen. The screens do at least change reasonably quickly.

As a game, Nosferatu offers nothing new on the decrepit pick-up-object-drop-object formula, but a decent execution and an interesting subject lift it above average. Still, when the subject is something like the living dead possessed by bloodlust, the execution shouldn't be this tame.

The market is bursting with games of this type. It's about time someone made something original for a change. Anyone interested in vampires would do better to invest their money in Stephen King's book Salem's Lot, which is a splendid example of how to suck fresh blood out of a worn-out subject.
