1990 SyksyThe beautiful French countryside, sunlight filtering through the trees, birdsong... Ah, how I would enjoy all of this, were my guts not spread all over the walls of my wrecked Sherman after a German Tiger punched a hole in the tank.
From the beaches of Normandy to the forests of the Ardennes and the Sahara desert stretches the story of the Allies' workhorse, the M4 Sherman. The player commands four Shermans and two jeeps in each section's five missions. The jeeps are good for reconnaissance, but the Shermans can be driven either by the player or by the computer. A computer-controlled Sherman can be ordered to go to a particular spot, whereupon it sails towards the objective at half speed, stopping to fight if it runs into the enemy. The tank the player drives personally is, by the way, the nimblest beast in the forest. Even when damaged it can zoom past any other tank.
The views from the tanks are limited to the map, the damage screen, a wide head-out-of-the-turret view and the driver's view. There's a hefty dose of shoot-'em-up flavour in the fact that if the target is roughly in line with the barrel and within range, you hit it.
Slick 3D graphics and good sound cover up for a while the fact that even the Ardennes are flat as a pancake. Only the trees provide any cover from view, but hills are sorely missed, and lots of them. The ST and Amiga versions differ only in their colours and in the Amiga's naturally better sound, though even the ST sound is good.
If Sherman had had more missions and more realistic terrain, then crikey! As it is, though, it ends up as more or less a poor man's Tank Platoon. On the other hand, it would be hypocritical to give the impression that M4 is a wretched botch, because the truth is I played it with great enthusiasm.
